SHOWCASE VIDEO - Ephrem Amare - 'Sey (Official Video) | 'แˆฐแ‹ญ - Ethiopian Music 2018

SELECTED COMMENTS FROM THIS VIDEO'S DISCUSSION THREAD

Many of the comments in this compilation include the commenter's nation, region, and/or ethnic group. Among the other comments that are included in this compilation are comments that express Ethiopian's pride in the diversity of their nation and comments that express the connection that the commenters feel toward another African nation or nations, and particularly toward another East African nation or East African nations.

A small portion of this song's lyrics are also included in a few of these comments.

I read A LOT of the comments in this discussion thread and I believe that I've included at least one example of every nation and/or every ethnic group that is mentioned in the comments that I read. More than one comment may be included for some nations/ethnic groups. (Full disclosure: I included a longish comment [#52] that I wrote in response to a comment about why people mention where they are from in their comments.

Except for a few comments,
I have purposely omitted comments that are political. I also purposely omitted comments that include profanity, and/or that are argumentative or insulting toward a nation and/or an ethnic group.

Numbers are added for referencing purposes only.

"abigail awasso, I'm African American.
I agree with the end of your comment. We are all human and should take time to enjoy the music. However, I like reading comments that identify where the person is from and/or his or her ethnic group. That documents the global reach of the singer and the song, and also shows that good music can be universally accepted and enjoyed. I also like comments that explain what the song is about-particularly if those comments are in English (since unfortunately it's the only language I understand).

Sometimes -as is the case with this discussion thread, some comments provide some information about the nation the singer is from. I'm learning more about various Ethiopian ethnic groups and about the Tigrigna language in Ethiopian and in Eritrea from reading these comments (and then looking up additional information online. Although I confess I mostly read comments in English, I sometimes use the Google translate feature to translate a comment in another language , but I don't know how accurate that is.

I've subscribed to this channel which I happened upon by "surfing" YouTube to find contemporary Ethiopian music.  Thank you Ephrem Amare and thanks to all those associated with this high quality song and video!

Peace & love and  keep on keeping on!

  1. Here's some information about the meaning of the referent "Habesha" that is included in one of the comments in this compilation and is also found in a number of other comments in that discussion thread that I didn't include in this compilation:

    From https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=habesha

    "Habesha
Habesha is a term Ethiopians and Eritreans use to refer to themselves. Habesha is a term of pride and used to eliminate the distinction between different tribes and celebrate unity as people of the same region.

For example: You ask "Are you habesha?" instead of "Are you Ethiopian/Eritrea?"

    Haben, August 4, 2004
    -snip-

This definition is different than the historical meaning of the referent "Habesha" as indicated in this Wikipedia page
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habesha_peoples
"Historically, the term "Habesha" represented northern Ethiopian Highlands Orthodox Christians, while the Oromos and "Shanqella" ethnic groups, as well as Muslims, were considered outside the periphery.[26][27][28][29] Predominately Muslim ethnic groups in the Eritrean Highlands such as the Tigre have historically opposed the name Habesha; Muslim Tigrinya-speakers are usually referred to as Jeberti people."...

    1. Here's another excerpt from that Wikipedia page:
"Within Ethiopian and Eritrean diasporic populations in North America, some second generation immigrants have adopted the term "Habesha" in a broader sense as a supra-national ethnic identifier inclusive of all Eritreans and Ethiopians. For those who employ the term, it serves as a useful counter to more exclusionary identities. However, this usage is not uncontested: On the one hand, those who grew up in Ethiopia or Eritrea may object to the obscuring of national specificity.[31]:186โ€“188 On the other hand, groups that were subjugated in Ethiopia or Eritrea sometimes find the term offensive.[32]"...
