Black Talk In A YouTube Gospel Discussion Thread: "Washboards", "Tambourines", "Went In", "Churchin" & More

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post provides a definition of code switching along with my comments about the African American custom of purposely code switching from standard American English to forms of African American Vernacular English when posting comments on the discussion threads of certain YouTube videos.

This post showcases a YouTube video that was published in 2010 of a Chicago, Illinois Missionary Baptist church choir singing the Gospel song "Stretch Out". Selected comments from that video's discussion thread are also included in this post. Most of these comments contain examples of African American Vernacular English.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE ON CODE SWITCHING IN THIS COMMENT COMPILATION
Quoting from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code-switching
code-switching is the use of more than one linguistic variety in a manner consistent with the syntax and phonology of each variety....
switching is practiced, for example, by speakers of African American Vernacular English as they move from less formal to more formal settings"...

My position is that many African Americans writing on certain YouTube video discussion threads purposely switch from standard American English to forms of African American Vernacular English. It's likely that other native English speaking people also purposely code switch from standard English to non-standard English when they write comments on certain YouTube discussion threads.

However, my focus in this post and in some other pancocojams posts* is the ways that a number of African Americans who know how to speak and write in standard American English purposely "put on the Black" when they write on certain YouTube discussion threads. It's my position that one reasons that such code-switching is usually done in a somewhat lighthearted, relaxed manner to signal to other people in that discussion thread and to people reading those discussion threads that the commenter is Black and is knowledgeable about certain forms of "Black talk".

In this compilation of comments from the discussion thread for this embedded contemporary Gospel video, code switching is characterized by the use of contemporary African American slang, and/or the use of African American Vernacular English spelling, and/or the use of religious African American Vernacular English (AAVE) terms. Code switching comments in this compilation are also characterized by the use of non-standard grammatical English that is (rightly or wrongly) usually associated with "Black talk" (i.e. African Americans use of American English.)

An example of the use of contemporary African American slang in this video's discussion thread is the present tense verb "sang" (meaning "to sing very well, especially to sing soulfully very well"). Another example of the use of contemporary African American slang in this video's discussion thread is the adjective "old school" (meaning something which is from the past, or someone who speaks, acts, dresses etc in ways that are associated with the past. "Old school" is usually considered positively.)

The vernacular use of the verb "killing" (meaning "doing something very well") is another example of contemporary African American slang in this video's discussion thread. That same meaning is given in the comment "She ate up that song." The word "Fire" in African American (and other) YouTube discussion threads means something that is done very well or someone who does something very well. "Fire" and flames emojis are contemporary members of the "hot"/"smoking" family of African American superlatives.

Some examples of "down home" (meaning old fashioned, Black Southern) spelling in this compilation are "chile" instead of "child", "Lawd" instead of "Lord", "Gawd" instead of "God", "dat" instead of "that" and "dem" instead of "them".

My position is that the use of these down home African American Vernacular English (AAVE) spelling in this discussion thread was a positive nod to- if not a tribute to- the old school Southern way the choir performed the featured song, included their use of old timey musical instruments such as the washboard and tambourines.

Examples of the use of AAVE originated religious terms in this compilation are the adjective "scantified" (in the context of African American culture, usually referring to Pentecostal denominations such as Church of God in Christ [COGIC] and their way of worshipping. Another example of African American Vernacular English in this discussion thread is the verb "went in" ("going in") meaning, experiencing the Holy Spirit and, as a result, behaving in certain ways that are out of your control , and the verbal phrase "cutting a step" which (in the context of these comments) means "doing a holy dance" (dancing as a result of feeling the Holy Spirit).

"GLORRRY", "GLORYYYYYYY!!!", "GLLLOOOOOORAAAAYYYYY" and other elongated spellings of that word in this discussion thread is probably an approximation of how the word "glory" is pronounced as an exclamation in certain "down home" scantified African American churches.

The meaning of the verbal phrase "stretch out" in the title and lyrics to the song embedded in this post is also an example of an African American originated religious term- "Stretch out" means holding ones hands up, reaching out to Jesus (or the Holy Spirit) for His (Its) help.

The verb "churchin" ("churching") is another example of African American Vernacular English originated church terms in this compilation. "Churchin" means "experiencing a church service, particularly a Holy Spirit filled, old school church service, including singing Gospel songs, feeling the Holy Spirit, hearing a sermon, and more".

Two examples of AAVE grammar in this discussion thread are "I done stretched out" and Yall betta sang". Another example of ; and (meaning the Baptist denomination is "churchin" the same way that Scantified [Church of God In Christ; Pentecostal] churches are known to do.

A few additional comments about African American originated terms and African American cultural references are included after certain selected comments in this compilation.

LYRICS: STRETCH OUT
(composer ?)

When troubles come and storms begin to rise
Hold on and learn to stretch out
Oh keep on fasting keep on praying
Hold on and learn to stretch out

When satan get on your trach
And tries to turn me back
I won't worry, i won't fret i just stretch out
Stretch out, oh stretch out

When days are dark and cloudy are my skies
I hold on and learn to stretch out
Oh keep on praying, keep on believing
Hold on and learn to stretch out

Cause the race isn't given to the swift
Neither is it given to the strong
But to him that endureth to the end
Stretch out, oh stretch out

When troubles come and storms begin to rise
Hold on and learn to stretch out
Oh keep on fasting keep on believing
Hold on and learn to stretch out

Cause the race isn't given to the swift
Neither is it given to the strong
But to him that endureth to the end
Stretch out, oh stretch out

When i am lost, when i am sad
Jesus is there, he'll make me glad
The lord won't deceive you
The lord he won't leave you

Stretch out

Stretch out
Stretch out
Stretch out on his word

Stretch out
Stretch out
Stretch out
Oh, stretch out

Stretch out!

"I've been directing choirs for over 35 years, and this choir is killing me. I mean I am screaming- the multitudes of tamborines, the washboards, the conversation in the midst of the song (talking behind a tamborine), sis on the front row turing to drink water, and the musicians that are not watching the director (missed the transition every time) - all in the same choir. And the song still worked!!!! I love it!!!!!! Too much!!!! LOL! Sang Ya'll!!!!!

Which is why I think that woman whispering behind the tamborine while the song was being sung and the woman that stopped everything on the front row of the choir stand to drink a glass of water should be thrown out of the choir. "Well the Baptist used to laugh at us COGIC folks and how we worshipped and praised. There was a time when they forbid drums and tambourines for dare being like those old "demon possesed Pentecostal holy roller COGIG people".

So the reason COGIC saints point this out so much because we once got laughed at, mocked and ridiculed for this very type of worship."

"I counted over NINE tambourines in that choir! All gospel choirs should liberally use tambourines--the crisp sound of this light percussion adds the "sparkle" or "shimmer" to the total listening experience of black gospel choral music, especially that from the Pentecostal
tradition. Tambourines are missing from too many choirs these days, and there's a definite
"hole" that can't be filled with hand claps and drums alone...and those WASHBOARDS!!! :-)"

"Bucking" here probably means "dancing" (as in doing the holy dance when a person "gets happy"; "goes in"). In African American culture, one style of "bucking" is the dance movement that is often performed by New Orleans second liners. Another style of "bucking" is performed by the Dancing Dolls majorette dancers in the television show Bring It!.
