Lists of Popular Names For Non-Hispanic Black Females Born In New York City (2013 & 2016)

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post provides excerpts from two pdfs of popular names that were given to  non-Hispanic Black females who were born in New York City in 2013 and who were born in 2016.

These names are from birth certificates that were provided to New York City's Department of Health. In addition to indicating how those names rank in popularity, these pdfs indicate the number of children born in New York City who were given that particular name (the "count.") Names with the same number have the same count. Those numbers aren't given in this pancocojams post.

These lists given without any editorial comments. Please share your observations about these lists in the comment section below.

The content of this post is presented for onomastic and historical purposes.

Thanks to the New York Health Department for developing these lists and this pdf file.

DEFINITION OF "HISPANIC"
"Hispanic" is a term that is used in the United States that includes people who are Black. Here are quoted from a September 2020 article entitled "Who Is Hispanic?" https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/09/15/who-is-hispanic/

..."So, who is considered Hispanic in the United States? And how are they counted in public opinion surveys, voter exit polls and government surveys such as the 2020 census?

[...]

the Census Bureau... relies entirely on self-reporting and lets each person identify as Hispanic or not.

[...]

The terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” are pan-ethnic terms meant to describe – and summarize – the population of people living in the U.S. of that ethnic background. In practice, the Census Bureau most often uses the term “Hispanic,” while Pew Research Center uses the terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” interchangeably.

[...]

In the eyes of the Census Bureau, Hispanics can be of any race, any ancestry or any country of origin."...
