"Fifth Harmony is an American girl group based in Miami, composed of Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, and previously Camila Cabello until her departure from the group in December 2016.[2][3] The group signed a joint record deal with Simon Cowell's label Syco Records and L.A. Reid's label Epic Records after forming and finishing third in the second season of the American singing competition series The X Factor in 2012. Rising to prominence by social media, the group's debut extended play and their three studio albums all charted within the top ten of the Billboard 200 in the United States.

... The group released their debut studio album Reflection in 2015, also receiving a gold certification in the country.[5] The album included the singles "Boss", "Sledgehammer" and "Worth It". The latter achieved triple platinum certification in the United States and reached the top-ten in thirteen countries. The following year, "Work from Home", the lead single from their second album 7/27, became the group's first top-ten single on the Billboard Hot 100[6] and the first top-five by a girl group in a decade on that chart.[7] They released their self-titled third album in 2017.

...The group went on hiatus in May 2018, allowing the members to pursue solo projects.[9]...

Composition

...the song features a militaristic drumline that lyrically revolves around a theme of empowerment.[9][10][11] During the chorus the group sings repeatedly the phrase "Michelle Obama, purse so heavy, getting Oprah dollars."[12]

"Boss" is a dance-pop, hip hop and R&B song.[13] It features trumpets, handclaps and heavy bass,[10] creating a rhythmic militaristic sound.[11] The lyrics features several cultural references. For example, the first verse refers to the hip hop dance move called the Nae Nae... Christina Garibaldi from MTV commented that the group "proudly sing about the fact they don't need a man as they "pledge allegiance to my independent girls in here."[10] In an interview with Garibaldi, the group stated that "the whole point of this song is for girls who are our age to turn it on and feel confident and empowered because at this age being insecure is such a common occurrence. So we think when you turn that song on, you feel sexy and feel good about yourself."[10]
-snip-
"Michelle Obama" was the First Lady of the United States when this song was released and "Oprah dollars" refers to the wealth and power of entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey.
