This is the way that the congregation of my African American American Baptist church singing "Blessed Assurance" (in Atlantic City, New Jersey). My recollections are from the 1950s to date. I believe that many other African American churches sing "Blessed Assurance" the standard way. I've never heard it in person sung any other way.
