STANDARD LYRICS FOR "MY GOD IS SO HIGH"
My God Is So High
My God is so high
So high -
You can’t get over Him;
So wide -
You can’t get around Him;
So low -
You can’t get under Him,
You mus’ go through the door.
Verses
1
One day as I was walking along the heavenly road
My Savior spoke unto me
An’ He fill’ my heart with love.
2
I’ll take my gospel trumpet an’ I’ll begin to blow,
An’ if my Savior help’ me,
I’ll blow wherever I go.
3
Come on everybody, stand up and praise the Lord;
Because if you don’t praise Him,
You can’t go through the door.

I learned the last line of the chorus as "You must come in at the door". Notice that in the examples given below that last line is given as "You must come in by and through the Lamb" -"the Door" and "the Lamb" are both references for Jesus.

Spirituals in Concert
Amazing performance by two Opera Greats:
Kathleen Battle & Jessye Norman
Both shine throughout the concert and it should leave no doubt to anyone that Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman are indeed two of the finest sopranos.
James Levine (Conductor)
Live from Carnegie Hall
March 18, 1990

Notice that Kathleen Battle sings "My Lord Is So High" instead of the words "My God Is So High". That's the way that I learned that song.

The song "You Must Come In At The Door" is an example of what I call a “gospelized Spiritual”. "Gospelized Spirituals" are religious songs that are based on African American Spirituals and are performed in a Gospel style.

ReplyDeleteA number of songs sung by historically Black Greek lettered fraternities are partly adapted from African American Spirituals. Another example is "Make Way The Q Train Is Coming" which is an adaption of the Spiritual "The Gospel Train".
