This pancocojams post showcases a 2025 YouTube video short of an older White American man who is dancing at a wedding or some other social function that appears to have only or mostly White people in attendance. The publisher of this video (who is a Black man), is heard saying in that video that this White man [has] "been around Black people."
This pancocojams post also includes my editorial comments about this video, including definitions of "the cookout" in the context of Black American culture and explanations about the phrase "being invited to the cookout" as that phrase pertains to non-Black Americans.
The racial referent "Black" in this YouTube video, in that video's discussion thread, and in this pancocojams compilation refers to "Black Americans" and the referent "White" refers to "White Americans". However, those terms probably also refer to other Black or White people throughout the world.
Selected comments from this video's discussion thread are also included in this post.
The content of this post is presented for historical, linguistic, and socio-cultural purposes.

Thanks to all those who are quoted in this post and thanks to the man who is showcased in that video. Thanks also to the publisher of this video on YouTube.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
Here are my thoughts about this video given in no particular order:
I'm showcasing this YouTube video short as a demonstration of R&B/Hip Hop social dancing from the 1980s and 1990s. One commenter wrote that the White man who is the focus of this video is doing "the Running Man" dance. That Hip Hop dance was most popular in the mid to late 1990s.
Another commenter wrote that part of the dance that that White man was doing was "the Markey Mark" The Marky Mark dance.was popular in the early 1990s, primarily fueled by the hit song "Good Vibrations" by recorded by the integrated (White/Black) group that was headed by Marky Mark, a White man.
I can't verify the accuracy of whether the dance that the White man performed is either or both of these dances.
**
I'm also interested in what these comments say and allude to about American society's opinions about Black American culture and White American culture particularly regarding the built in belief that Black people can dance better than White people.
Commenters in this discussion thread offered four reasons why they believed that this White man danced "like he was a Black (American). Those theories were
1. He lived around, went to school with, and/or played on a football team with Black people.
2. He had been to a lot of Black cookouts and ate a lot of Black American soul food [This theory is an expansion of #1, the theory that was given by commenters more than any other one.],
3. He watched a lot of television shows that had Black people as their primarily audience (such as "Soul Train", and BET [Black Entertainment Television] shows,.
4. He had been drinking a lot at the wedding (and as a result he lost his inhibitions and could dance better as a result of that.
**
Alternatively, a few commenters wrote that this White man danced well because he had natural dancing ability.
**
A number of commenters wrote that this man danced like no one was watching him. I think that the video shows the opposite, but that statement may suggest that White people or maybe people in general dance better (i.e. dance more freely) when they are unconcerned about what other people think about how they are dancing. In the context of this discussion, this may mean that the commenters who wrote this statement believe that Black people dance better because they are less concerned about what other people think about them or their dancing reflects the aesthetic tastes and preferences of their community.
**
I'm also interested in the way that commenters express themselves in this discussion thread i.e. their use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Definitions for five examples of AAVE that are frequently used in this compilation are given immediately below.
Commenters in this discussion thread used "unc", "pops", "dad" and other male relative or friend referents for this White man. This video's narrator [caption writer] and some of this video's commenters refer to this man as their uncle. Some other commenters or dad. These comments may be interpreted It's possible that some of these commenters may mean that this man is their actual father, but I believe that it's more likely that those commenters mean that this man reminds them of their uncle or another older male relative or they are using the AAVE meaning of the word "unc".
**
Some commenters in this discussion thread used a number of given names for this White man who is said to be dancing like he grew up around Black people. The comments in this compilation include the names "Uncle Dan" , "Uncle Drew", "Uncle Tim", "Uncle Carl", "Uncle James", "Uncle Earl", "Uncle George", Uncle Mike" and others. In addition, among other given names, at least one commenter referred to this White man as "Dan" without the "uncle" title, one referred to him as "Bill", and one referred to him as "Ted" etc..
This video didn't identify that man by name. My guess is that these names refer to a family member or a friend friend of the commenters who reminds them of the White man who is the focus of this video.
If not, I wonder if this plethora of names reflects the lack of agreement that commenters have about a name that American society uses for "an older White man-or any White man- who dances like he grew up around Black Americans", In contrast, consider the consistency of the use of the given name "Karen" in American society for a certain type of White female or any White female (and sometimes also a certain type of White male).

A FEW AFRICAN AMERICAN VERNACULAR ENGLISH (AAVE) WORDS OR PHRASES THAT ARE FREQUENTLY FOUND IN THESE COMMENTS
This section of this post showcases five African American Vernacular English (AAVE) words and phrases (as well as the Jamaican phrases "Big up" and "One love".) that commenters used in this discussion thread. These examples are given in the order of the frequency of their use in this compilation of these selected comments.
All of these definitions are from Google's AI Overview (results from December 7, 2025)
Other definitions for these terns and sayings may differ slightly or significantly.
This compilation includes additional AAVE words, phrases, and sayings. However, those examples aren't highlighted and are usually not defined or explained by my editorial comments or otherwise.
Unc (also spelled "unk")
"In slang, "unc" short for uncle) refers humorously to an older man, often someone out of touch with current trends, trying too hard to be young, or exhibiting "old" behaviors like complaining or using outdated slang, originating from AAVE but now widely used online to tease peers. It can also be a respectful term for a respected older male figure, but its modern online use often carries a playful, teasing tone about aging or being uncool ("unc status").".
**
(Black) cookout
"A Black cookout is a culturally significant outdoor gathering for Black families and friends, centered on soul food,
music, games (like Spades/Dominoes), and community bonding serving as a joyful, sacred space for cultural expression, family connection, and healing from daily racism, distinct from a typical BBQ by its deep traditions and importance for Black joy and fellowship. It's a metaphor for inclusion within the community, where being "invited to the cookout" signifies trust and acceptance.
**
invited to the cookout
" "You're invited to the cookout" is a popular
cultural phrase in Black communities that functions as a metaphor for
acceptance, belonging and cultural alignment. An "invite" signifies
that a non-Black person is respected as an ally and is welcome in Black spaces.
Understanding the Phrase
Metaphorical Acceptance: The phrase goes beyond a literal
invitation to a barbecue; it is a symbol of approval and a sign that the
individual "gets it"—meaning they understand and respect Black
culture.
A "Huge Award" for Allies: For non-Black
individuals, receiving an "invite" is seen as a significant honor, an
acknowledgment of their genuine support and understanding of the community and
its values.
A Place of Rest and Fellowship: The "cookout" is a
deeply cultural space for Black people to celebrate their heritage, share food,
and find community and rest from the "White gaze" and societal
racism."...
**
Get it! (person's name or reference to a person, person's or a group)
-snip-
Black Americans and others may also use the term "Get it [person's name]!" or similar words and terms such as "Go[person's name] to convey its standard meaning of retrieving something.
**
Getting down
"In African American Vernacular English (AAVE), "getting
down" or "to get down" has several related meanings that
generally imply a focus, intensity, or uninhibited engagement with an activity.
Primary meanings include:
To dance: The most common meaning is to dance, often in an
energetic, uninhibited, and enthusiastic way. This usage was popularized during
the disco era and has remained a common expression."...
-snip-
Other AAVE meanings for "getting down" are included in AI Overview write-ups and elsewhere online.

This is another comment that alludes to the theory that this White man danced that way because drinking alcohol loosened his inhibitions. Either these commenters don't believe that this White man is "dancing the way that Black people dance" or they believe that Black people dance the way we dance because we all get drunk or high to loosen our inhibitions or we have fewer inhibitions and that allows us to dance the way we do (or they think most of us do)..
