"Ok... Based on this video alone, why do some of you think
The Crown should have won? I mean, that sh-t was OK at best. Jaira Joy
definitely deserved the win. Are we not all watching the same thing? 😳"

"To be able to krump in an afrobeat song is what makes a
dancer great. Jean Michel really did it for me.
I think Waackxxxy didn't show that much versatility.
Popping, Hiphop, floor work, Afrobeats, audience interaction which Jaira
showed. She kinda lacked some of those. She was focused too much on techniques."

"I'm not a professional dancer or anything but Wackxxxy
showed versatility. Whacking, popping, and floor performance was shown, and she
even used a prop to her dancing, I don't think versatility is what Wackxxxy was
lacking. For ME, she won every round, except the tie breaker, cause she was
obviously tired."

"Glad to see others in the comments here thinking the same as
me ~ The Crown should have won, in my opinion. He was SO good, SO aligned with
the music and connected to his "wild root" as one of my teachers,
Amit Carmelli, calls it. Jaira Joy was also SO good & I definitely see why
she won the entire competition, , for sure, but in the specific battle between
him and her, The Crown really should have won."

"프리파이널부터 쭉 보니까 jaira 춤이 엄청 특별하거나 독창적이진 않지만 젤 안정적으로 첨부터 끝까지 높은 퀄로 페이스 유지한 것 같아서 우승할 만했다는 생각 드네요 근데 무대 위에서 내내 서서 보는 관중들도 체력 대단함..댄서들이라 그런가 힘들어보이지도 않음"

"Having watched from the pre-finals onwards, I think Jaira's dancing wasn't incredibly special or original, but she maintained a consistently high level of performance from start to finish, which is why I think she deserved to win. But the audience members who stood and watched the entire time also have amazing stamina... maybe it's because they're dancers themselves, but they didn't seem tired at all."

"Bar set kinda low across the board here. This caliber of urban or street styles of dance depresses me . Seems like the audience doesn’t know any better either. Are we getting further and further away from true artists and street dancers with real skill? I feel sorry for the younger generation they have no idea what they missed out on and what’s been lost."

"@elizzy01 Makes sense! Thanks for elaborating. I
thought that same thing in one of the matches with Hirokoboogie too - the song
they gave her didn't match her style at ALL so she wasn't able to shine like I
saw her do in other matches. I'm not as familiar with Waackxxxy's style, though
I loved her too, so thanks again for explaining!"

@Katyayanibetha No problem. While it's my opinion and less
popular among the many Waackxxxy fans (myself included but just being
objective), I do think understanding culture comes into play in a room full of
other dancers who also study dance (and dance culture) from various genres.
There are levels and aspects to dance so when everyone is killing the beat,
it's the other nuances that can give a dancer the edge. Waackxxy hit all the
beats, but Jaira knew reggaeton better and just had that slight edge - the
nuanced cultural details that we can spot and make us go WILD. You can see it
in the audience too where they are looking for them to playy with the music and
understand it. There are many ways to do it! I can see Jaira's prep/training
paid off. I didn't know her before this. 😄

Waackxxxy has been dancing a long time and I've seen her growth. She has gotten to a point where she's become one of the most versatile Waackers and proving herself with the fusion (+popping) training that got her a DYS win! To be good at this level, you have to be able to dance to anything even when it doesn't suit your style (overcome the disadvantage). But then to one up from that level, know the culture behind the dance genre! It goes deep into connection, feeling, history all that.
Thanks for allowing me to ramble btw 🤣💕

"@elizzy01 That makes sense too, and that's some
brilliant insight! I just realized that I also tend to gravitate toward and
like dancers whose dance styles I'm more familiar with too. I thought Waackxxxy
was amazing too, but I'm sure I haven't caught all the nuances you mention.

"@elizzy01 Yes,
that's exactly what it was with Hirokoboogie! I loved one of her performances
in one of the other competitions leading up to the finals SO much, and the song
was SO fitting. I did catch the performance in the finals too that she
absolutely rocked too, it was the other one that I didn't feel she got a chance
to shine on.
Waackxxxy is definitely super talented and I can tell she has put a LOT of hours in developing her dance. I think this is the first time I've came across waacking, that I can remember, so it's new to me, but she definitely blew me away for sure. So quick thinking and she's good at staying connected to what one of my teachers, Amit Carmelli calls, our "wild root" too, which is one of my top values when it comes to dancing or anything related to music, actually. 'Wild Root' refers to where you get your conscious mind out of the way for the most part so the music is what's moving rather than the dictates of your conscious mind, . In contrast, while not as much during the finals, some of the dancers I saw perform, you can tell that they are solely just showing off moves to the beat of the music rather than actually dancing TO the music, like a 'flow state' too except with less involvement of the mind so that we're primarily moving with soul rather than with conscious thought. Anyway, that's what I love and practice and I found Waackxxy to be really good at staying in touch with that wild root.
Thanks once again for that final insight you shared, as well. I've never participated in a competition, but I've been freestyle dancing for 30 years and playing music & singing since I could talk, performing live solos since Kindergarten, so music was my first love. You've inspired me to dance to genres of music I don't usually dance to now though, because that makes sense. Recently is the first I've ever heard of Red Bull's Dance competitions and I actually didn't even know until now that competitions for freestyle dance even existed! (I am using 'freestyle' here broadly to refer to all these styles, or rather, anything not choreographed ahead of time) So now I'm interested in competing, just because it would be SO fun to. I might even start hosting competitions myself! Virtually live and eventually in person (I've worked a lot in arts & music production & ran my own booking & management agency a long time ago, so I'm experienced at throwing events). I have only known people in circles I run in to freestyle dance, I didn't know it was recognized in this way, so I've been so hyped up and stoked on seeing all these dancers on such a prominent platform as Red Bull is providing. So awesome! I'm stoked as I LOVE to dance SO much and I always get such touching feedback from people sometimes who I dance for, so this has definitely inspired me to do more with it now."...

Here's an AI Overview write-up that is the result of my question "Is Freestyle dancing the same as Hip Hop Dancing?"
ReplyDeleteNo, street dancing and hip-hop aren't the same; street dance is the broad umbrella term for various urban styles (like Locking, Popping, Breaking) that started outside studios, while hip-hop dance is a specific, core style under that umbrella, evolving from hip-hop culture, but not encompassing all street styles. Think of it as: all hip-hop dance is street dance, but not all street dance is hip-hop dance.
Street Dance (The Umbrella Term)
Definition: A catch-all for dances from urban environments (streets, clubs).
Includes: Hip-hop, Breaking (B-boying), Locking, Popping, House, Waacking, etc..
Key Feature: Improvisation, personality, and roots in Black and Latino communities.
Hip-Hop Dance (A Specific Style)
Definition: Styles performed to hip-hop music, evolving within hip-hop culture.
Includes: Old-school party dances (Running Man, Smurf) and newer grooves, focusing on rhythm and feeling.
Key Feature: A specific groove and cultural connection to the broader hip-hop movement (DJing, MCing, graffiti).
Analogy: If "Street Dance" is "Fruit," then "Hip-Hop Dance" is an "Apple" – a delicious type of fruit, but not the only fruit. "
