"The phrase "the math ain't mathin'".

Bit Annoyed

It just sounds stupid.

90% of the time when I hear the phrase it's in reference to some insane flat earth conspiracy theory. "The moon landing was faked. The math ain't mathin'!"

People say it's AAVE but I'm convinced it was invented by terminally online white people who think that's how black people talk."

2. RobertFellucci, 2023
"What? How do you get to it being a race thing? Your math ain't mathin'."

3.

"Yeah, math is universally hated among the entire human race.

No but really why is the implication that other races revolve around what black people do.”

4.
Paintguin, 2023
"I’ve never heard of it"

5. Ariyinke, 2023
“The linguistic term for this is denominalization or 'verbing'. It is semi-frequently used in AAVE.”

6. Sea_Masterpiece9079, 2024
"I heard it from black people. I'm White. My grammar is awful so when I hear things I check things before I say them LOL I'm sure eventually I'll like the way it sounds. I'm also on my way to being an old a** lady. So I'm sure the older I get the more proper I'm going to want to say things?"

2. African American actress Taraji P. Henson used that phrase during her appearance on a December 2023 radio show.

From https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/taraji-p-henson-tears-while-224602993.html "Taraji P. Henson in Tears While Saying “The Math Ain’t Mathing” Due to Pay Disparity in Hollywood" by Chris Gardner, December 20, 2023
"Taraji P. Henson broke down in tears during an appearance on Gayle King’s Sirius XM radio show when asked whether she has plans to quit acting.

“Are you thinking about it?” King asked the Oscar-nominated actress while she was seated next to Blitz Bazawule and Danielle Brooks to promote their film The Color Purple. The question caused Henson to pause, cover her eyes with one of her hands and tear up. “I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious about what I do, getting paid a fraction of the cost. I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired.”

[…]

Henson continued the subject by telling King that “the math ain’t mathing” when it comes to her salaries and supporting the team of people that work with her and for her. “When you start working a lot, you know, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone,” she explained. “There’s a whole entire team behind us. They have to get paid.

[...]

A Black Lady Sketch Show creator Robin Thede posted a thread encouraging her followers to watch the interview and then took a moment to break down the math that comes with taxes, commissions to agents, managers and lawyers and fees for employees. “This woman is OSCAR NOMINATED — imagine the struggle for 99% of the rest. Maybe folks won’t relate but that’s also the issue — being misunderstood and people just assuming they’re ‘rich.’ So next time yall see an actor working at Trader Joe’s, maybe it will hit different,” she shared before praising Henson on a personal level."...

4. The saying "this math ain't matchin" is used on this "memes" page to refer to people feeling old when they remember when certain products or certain movies first came out.  The fact that these things used to be "the rage" no longer computes (doesn't make sense anymore for the people who thought that and certainly don't make any sense to the young people nowadays).
