Latest update: December 25, 2021

This pancocojams post showcases a Dec. 8, 2021 YouTube video of African American YouTube reaction music vlogger Mansa Mayne who is visiting South Africa.

This post also includes biographical information about Mansa Mayne. In addition, selected comments from that embedded video's discussion thread are presented in this pancocojams post.

The content of this post is presented for historical and sociocultural purposes.
I consider the visit of an African American vlogger who has a large South African following to South Africa during the omicron pandemic to have both historical significance and socio-cultural ramifications.

Thanks to Mansa Mayne for raising awareness about contemporary South African and other contemporary African music among people in the United States and other people throughout the world. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post.

My apologies. I mistakenly gave Mansa Mayne's name as "Mansa Musa" in the title for this pancocojams post, but I corrected that mistake almost a day after publishing this post.

ICOMMENTS ABOUT THE FOCUS OF THIS PANCOCOJAMS POST
Mansa Mayne in a young African American who is the host of a YouTube vlog (video log) where he reacts to YouTube music videos. That vlog encourages reactions to that same video from its subscribers and others watching his vlog, and also encourages people to share which other songs he should react to next. Mansa Mayne is highly regarded by many South Africans in large part because his vlog mostly focuses on contemporary secular South African music, especially Amapiano music/dance. Many South Africans are also fans of Mansa Mayne because of his personality and his enthusiasm for the contemporary South African music scene.

I base these conclusions on South Africans' comments on his YouTube vlog, including the discussion thread for this embedded video. (That vlog also has a number of non- South African subscribers and non African subscribers, including African Americans like me.)  South Africans' high regard for Mansa Musa is probably  also demonstrated by their participation on Mansa Musa's instagram account. However, I don't have an IG account and have no direct knowledge of Mansa Musa's or anyone else's instagram account.

The focus of this pancocojams post is on the discussion thread for this embedded video/vlog much more than on the video itself. Mansa Mayne shot that video and -as the video shows & some commenters in that discussion thread testify- he isn't experienced in doing the type of vlogging that is based on camera shots.

I read all of the comments as of this date & time (Dec. 8, 2021, mostly ending around 10:30 PM EDT and a few comments from Dec. 8, 2021 that I read and added in the early morning of Dec. 9, 2021.) I recognize that a discussion thread compilation of selected comments that is made by anyone else would be different than any that I make. Almost all of the comments in this video's (vlog's) discussion thread are about Mansa Mayne's visit to South Africa.

There are some socio-political comments about South Africans' relationship with/opinions about Nigerians and other socio-political comments that I purposely didn't include in this compilation.  I also didn't include any examples of the multiple comments asking Mansa to visit other African countries since he is now in Africa. The only comments that I made sure to include in this pancocojams compilation were those that refer to Covid-19 itself, and/or Covid preventative measures such as wearing a mask, and/or the United States (or other nation's) travel ban/restrictions on people coming from South Africa because of the new Covid variant.

My guess is that Mansa Mayne chose the "Mansa" part of his name from the historical "Mansa Musa". The word "Mansa" was the title of the ruler of the Islamic West African empire of Mali (c. 1280 – c.1337). "Mansa" means "ruler" and/or "priest-king". The name "Musa" means the same thing as the name "Moses". Click https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansa_Musa for more information about Mansa Musa.

NOTE ABOUT COVID-19 & TRAVEL BANS
Since this post is about travel to South Africa during this phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, I'm including this quote from the United States CDC that was included in this Dec. 8, 2021 article: https://news.yahoo.com/cdc-now-advises-against-travel-160857998.html

"Do not travel internationally until you are fully vaccinated," the CDC advises. "Fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19. However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading some COVID-19 variants.

This week, the United States implemented a new policy requiring all international travelers, including U.S. citizens, to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within one day of their flight, regardless of their vaccination status.".

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT MANSA MAYNE
Mansa Mayne is the screen name for an African American male cultural influencer via his instagram account and his YouTube channel.  Mansa's YouTube channel consist of him reacting to music videos which he shows on his screen and which he is seeing for the first time.

Mansa Mayne doesn't have a Wikipedia page and biographical information about him is difficult to find. However, I found the following biographical information about Mansa Mayne on
https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/reaction-videos-are-helping-uk-rappers-reach-a-us-audiencebut-could-marketing-money-spoil-that/ "Reaction Videos Are Helping UK Rappers Reach a U.S. Audience
Could marketing money spoil that?" by Will Pritchard, July 30, 2019
…."Louisville, Kentucky’s Tremayne Yocum, 25, spends his time outside of work filming reactions to UK rap videos under the moniker Mansa Mayne. Yocum originally launched his channel in April 2018 to document the growth of his dreadlocks. Within a few months, one of his UK-based subscribers, Dan Gill, sent him a message suggesting he respond to British rap. Per Gill’s recommendation, the YouTuber started surfing key UK rap channels like GRM Daily and Link Up TV, looking for tracks to include in reaction videos. As he embraced the format, his subscriber numbers grew from hundreds to thousands—and the most dedicated among them had plenty to say. “I’ll be honest with you,” Yocum says with a chuckle, “I had no type of knowledge of UK music. It was so bad because I was pronouncing people’s names wrong, and I would hear about it in the comments section.”

While Yocum maintains that his channel is mostly about entertaining people, he also acknowledges that his videos provide a platform for UK artists to reach a broader audience. “Somebody like me, I’d never heard of these artists before,” he says, referring to rappers like Fredo, Dave, and Stormzy, “but now I know other Americans who’ve heard of them because of me.”…
snip-
At some point, Mansa Mayne began to focus almost exclusively on YouTube videos of South African music, especially Amapiano music videos. As a result of that focus, Mansa Maynes' YouTube vlog has a lot of South African followers. Those subscribers even gave him the South African name "Tshepo" (a Sotho language name meaning "hope", "trustworthy", "reliable").

According to various commenters, sometimes in 2019 Mansa promised his vlog's subscribers (known as "Maniacs") that he would visit South Africa. And in spite of the new Covid-19 variant that South African researchers announced was in that nation and in spite of the United States' ban on travelers arriving from South Africa, Mansa arrived in that country on December 7, 2021.

Click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4THo2dsJPY&ab_channel=MansaMayne for a March 5, 2021 Mansa Mayne vlog titled "
Reacting to my @TrendingSA SABC 3. Interview!". "SABC 3".

Here's information about SABC 3 from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SABC_3
"SABC 3 (stylised as S3) is a South African free-to-air television network owned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). It carries programming in English and, as of April 2009, Afrikaans"...
-end of quote-
That March  5, 2021  vlog shows the early 2019 virtual interview that Mansa Mayne on the South African television talk show "TrendingSA" . (Mansa was in the USA for that interview). Commenters on that video's discussion thread wrote that this talk series is very highly regarded and that show was seen by millions of people throughout the nation of South Africa.

That March 2021 vlog confirms all of the information that was given in that pitchfork.com article which is quoted above (including Mansa Mayne's "government name"), and it also adds more comments from Mansa Mayne about how his vlog became centered around South African music. The large number of comments in that discussion thread from South Africans exhorting him to visit that nation probably helped motivate Mansa Mayne to make that visit in December 2021, inspite of the Covid-19 pandemic and the travel warnings the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) made about travel to South Africa and to various other nations around the world.

"Mansa is in South Africa and we are all excited πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦. We all just want to see you have a great time and experience south africa with all it has to offer and create great memories.

Here are a few pointers  for the guys who are hosting you:

1. Organize Mansa a videographer so he doesn't have to worry about vlogging and trying to be present

2. Prepared an itinerary for him ( Let Mansa experience South Africa in all of it's diversity.

3. Give Mansa time to rest as well- The time difference alone is already throwing him off.

4. Let's not overwhelm him with doing too much in a day, e.g podcasts and so forth and promoting brands he doesn't know. Let's give him time to slowly adjust to S.A

5. Let's give Mansa his Private Space at the apartment - his apartment should really be off limits. I felt really uncomfortable when everyone was at Mansa apartment chilling inside of exploring JHB.

Let's make Mansa feel at home!!

Mansa is shy you can clearly see in the videos. I'm sure there's certain things he didn't like but didn't say because he didn't want to be rude..

Hi Mansa... I think you did yourself a disservice by allowing these kids to be your tour guides. I got nothing against them... They should given you atleast 1 experience of what it's like to ride a taxi in S.A. 1. A number of commenters in that video (vlog)'s discussion thread indicate great disappointment in the young South African men who are serving as Mansa Mayne's "tour guides" during his visit to that nation. A lot of these commenters suggested places in Johannesburg that Mansa Mayne should experience instead of just eating & drinking and hanging out with the guys (my terms and not theirs).

What interests me is that there are only a few comments that appear to regard Covid-19 and its Omicron variant as a factor that could or should impact Mansa's or any other person's actions, interactions, and itinerary in South Africa during this time.

I hope that Mansa Mayne and others are right to disregard Covid-19- if that is what they are doing. However, I'm afraid that they are wrong to do so.

  2. "That Fire La" is a very similar YouTube reaction video blog (vlog) as Mansa Mayne's vlog. Both of those vlogs are hosted by young African American men and both usually react to South African contemporary music videos. Big Ralph is the host of That Fire LA and the "LA" refers to Los Angeles, California.

I'm not sure which of these two vlogs was the first. However, it's clear from this comment exchange from their South African subscribers love both of these African American vloggers and see no rivalry between them.

    1. Mansa Mayne hasn't published a vlog since Dec. 22, 2021. In that vlog he indicated that he was going to take a Covid test and hoped that it was negative so that he could fly back to his home in the USA. Like others subscribers of that vlog, I'm worried about what is going on with that brother.

"I'ma be real with you bro. Your first few vlogs were great but the rest were not so good but we've supported you anyways. You haven't really been showing as much love as we have been showing you. You've reached 500k subscribers and still your silent. This is where Ralph has the upper hand, he somehow shows gratitude and that he genuinely likes his subscribers. If he comes to Africa and does better vlogs his going to grow way too faster and you will never catch up to him again"

    3. I published this comment from me as the first reply to my comment about the fire la's vlog, but re-published it as I had made a mistake regarding the numbers that I cited.

For the record, the fire la's YouTube channel has 567,000 susbscribers (as of Dec. 25, 2021) and Mansa Mayne's YouTube channel just reached 500,000 subscribers on Dec. 24, 2021. Thousands of Mansa Mayne's new subscribers signed up during his visit to South Africa.

Mansa Mayne hasn't published a vlog since Dec. 22, 2021. In that vlog he indicated that he was going to take a Covid test and hoped that it was negative so that he could fly back to his home in the USA. 4. Since I've published four posts about that trip, I've decided to share some of my opinions about Mansa Mayne's visit to the nation of South Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic (Dec. 2021).

I can understand how Mansa Mayne may have felt (may still feel) that going to South Africa this December was something he should do, in part, because he wanted to experience South Africa, and so many of his subscribers are South African, and he & his vlog had just gotten recognition this year on a national South African talk show, and so many of those subscribers were asking him to visit South Africa.

I also get why Mansa Mayne may have decided to travel to South Africa during December since December is considered THE festive/party time in that nation (and in other African nations such as Ghana and Liberia).

The South African announcement about the highly contagious omicron variant of Covid-19 might have caused him to cancel his plans, and perhaps it was courageous and honorable not to do so.

I assume that Mansa had to have testing and vaccinations in order to travel to South Africa and also had testing when he arrived in South Africa.

When Mansa Mayne made the decision to travel to South Africa DURING THE PANDEMIC, I believe he should have planned to follow and then should have followed the protocols that were set up for how people should act and interact during a pandemic such as wearing a face mask PROPERLY while around other people, not being in over crowded settings, maintainin social distancing, going to a doctor if and when they felt sick, and quarantining themselves if and when they felt sick even if they didn't have Covid-19.*

Unfortunately, as his South African vlogs and some of the comments in their discussion threads document, Mansa Mayne didn't follow these protocols. .

Watching Mansa Mayne's South Africa vlogs and particularly reading the comments in those vlogs' discussion threads motivated me (as an arm chair traveler) to surf the internet and watch and read discussion threads for a number of other travel vloggers who I hadn't been familiar with (some African American and some from other African nations). As a result, I learned more about the history and current dynamics of South Africa (such as the differences between Coloured and mixed race in that nation compared to in the USA). And I'm still learning.

I think Mansa Mayne also learned from his experiences in South Africa and I dare say if and when he has to travel again during a pandemic, I think he would do a lot of things differently than he did this time-including following pandemic health and safety protocols, not just to protect himself*, but also to protect others and to serve as a role model for others to do the same.

*I don't know whether Mansa Mayne had Covid-19 in South Africa. He may have "just" had a bad cold or flu. However, I think that when he felt ill for a couple of days, he still should have followed protocols such as going to a doctor rather than continuing to self-medicate himself. Not going to a doctor or getting tested when he felt sick is part of what I mean that I believe that Mansa Mayne wasn't a good role model during a pandemic.
