INFORMATION ABOUT ELIJAH
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah
"Elijah ...Hebrew... meaning "My God is Yahu/Jah"[1][2]) or Elias (/ᵻˈlaɪ.əs/; Greek: Ηλίας Elías; Syriac: ܐܸܠܝܼܵܐ‎ Elyāe; Arabic: إلياس or إليا, Ilyās or Ilyā) was a prophet and a miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel[3] during the reign of Ahab (9th century BC), according to the Books of Kings in the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah defended the worship of Yahweh over that of the Canaanite deity Baal. Yahweh also performed many miracles through Elijah, including resurrection (raising the dead), bringing fire down from the sky, and entering Heaven alive "by a whirlwind".[4] He is also portrayed as leading a school of prophets known as "the sons of the prophets".[5] After his death, Elisha his disciple and most devoted assistant took over his role as leader of this school. The Book of Malachi prophesies Elijah's return "before the coming of the great and terrible day of Yahweh",[6] making him a harbinger of the Messiah and of the eschaton in various faiths that revere the Hebrew Bible. References to Elijah appear in Ecclesiasticus, the New Testament, the Mishnah and Talmud, the Quran, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and Bahá'í writings.

In Judaism, Elijah's name is invoked at the weekly Havdalah ritual that marks the end of Shabbat, and Elijah is invoked in other Jewish customs, among them the Passover Seder and the brit milah (ritual circumcision). He appears in numerous stories and references in the Haggadah and rabbinic literature, including the Babylonian Talmud.
The Christian New Testament [7] describes how Elijah was thought, by some, to be the Messiah. Jesus makes it clear that John the Baptist is "the Elijah" who was promised to come in Malachi 4:5.[8] Elijah appears with Moses during the Transfiguration of Jesus. Elijah is also a figure in various Christian folk traditions, often identified with earlier pagan thunder or sky gods.

In Islam, Elijah appears in the Quran as a prophet and messenger of God, where his biblical narrative of preaching against the worshipers of Baal is recounted in a concise form.[9] Due to his importance to Muslims, Catholics and Orthodox Christians, Elijah has been venerated as the patron saint of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1752."...

Example #2: Elijah - (Barbershop Quartet with Guitar) - By JR

StillJreming, Published on Feb 15, 2013

It's been my desire for a long time to pay a tribute to the Barbershop Gospel Quartets that I grew up listening to and that vastly influenced my music. From the Golden Gate Quartet to the Jubalaires and even lesser known bands like the Dixieraires, they brought the Negro Spirituals out of the confines of the sweat and tears of the cotton fields, to make it a music of harmony and jubilation. I hope you enjoy, this is only a start! :-)

LYRICS - GOLDEN GATE QUARTET - ELIJAH*
(as sung by The Golden Gate Quartet)

All:
God said He would
Send down fire
Send it down to Elijah
Said He would set the altar on fire
Yep, didn’t He say
Didn’t He say

God said He would
Send down fire
(Yeah)
Send it down to Elijah
Said He would set the altar on fire
Yep, didn’t He say
Didn’t He say

Other members of the quartet hum “Hmmm” after every line

Soloist :
Well, God know Elijah was a great man of God
They tell me that Elijah went wandering abroad
In a land of no food, no water to drink
But they tell me, Great God, he had the Bible strength
He got food from the raven and the dove
Water from the brooks so I heard
So he went struttin’ on down to Israel land
To tell them how long the family would stand.

All:
God said He would
Send down fire
Send it down to Elijah
Said He would set the altar on fire
Yep, didn’t He say
Didn’t He say

God said He would
Send down fire
(Yeah)
Send it down to Elijah
Said He would set the altar on fire
Yep, didn’t He say
Ah, didn’t He say

Soloist:
(Members of the quartet hum “Dooo” in the background after every line)
Great God!
Then old King Ahab he wanted to know
How could be so sure
Then Elijah said “Stop” Let me show
That a man of God ought to know
Just heard from the Master and got a request
Just build and have a contest
Ah build an altar all made of stone
And the mighty man began to moan.
And they cried “Baal”

All:
Send down the fire
(Oh!)
Send the fire
Oh, send the fire
Send the fire from the sky

(Woah! Call them!)
Send the fire
(Woah! Call them!)
Send the fire
Well, call a little louder.
Oh, won’t you call them.

Some people sleepin.
Won’t you send the fire from the sky.

Soloist:
Members of the quartet hum “oooo” throughout
From morning to evening they did cry
Tryin to bring down fire from the sky
Then Elijah callin from freedom land
to the Rose of Sharon, the God on high
Then lightning came down from the sky
And struck the altar with a burning fire
And the people standing heard him cry

God said He would

All:
God said He would
Send down fire

(Said He would)
Send it down to Elijah

(Said He would)
Set the altar on fire
Didn’t He say
Didn’t He say

ADDENDUM- THE CHRISTIAN MEANING OF THE TERM "HOLY FIRE"
From https://www.gotquestions.org/Holy-Spirit-fire.html
"Question: "How is the Holy Spirit like a fire?"

Answer: The Bible describes God as “a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29), so it is not surprising that fire often appears as a symbol of God’s presence. Examples include the burning bush (Exodus 3:2), the Shekinah glory (Exodus 14:19; Numbers 9:15-16), and Ezekiel’s vision (Ezekiel 1:4). Fire has many times been an instrument of God’s judgment (Numbers 11:1, 3; 2 Kings 1:10, 12) and a sign of His power (Judges 13:20; 1 Kings 18:38).

For obvious reasons, fire was important for the Old Testament sacrifices. The fire on the altar of burnt offering was a divine gift, having been lit originally by God Himself (Leviticus 9:24). God charged the priests with keeping His fire lit (Leviticus 6:13) and made it clear that fire from any other source was unacceptable (Leviticus 10:1-2).

… At the very beginning of the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is associated with fire. John the Baptist predicts that Jesus will be the One to “baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Matthew 3:11). When the Holy Spirit began His ministry of indwelling the early church, He chose to appear as “tongues of fire” resting on each of the believers. At that moment, “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:3-4).”...

LYRICS: DIDN'T IT RAIN
(as sung by Harry Belafonte & The Belafonte Singers)

Didn't it rain, children
Talk about
Rain all night long
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Oh, my Lord
Didn’t it rain
[3x]

[Backup singers repeat “Listen to the rain” while soloist sings]
Well, you read in the Good Book you must understand
that Noah was living as a righteous man
The Lord called Noah and gave him a plan
Build an ark at my command!

[Backup singers repeat “Listen to the rain”]

Water rising in the East
And rising in the West
Men groaning in the North
Some moaning in the South

[Backup singers repeat “Listen to the rain”
Soloist - Oh-o” [repeatedly]
Just listen.
How it rains
All day
All night

Water rising in the East
And rising in the West
Men groaning in the North
Some moaning in the South

Didn't it rain, children
Talk about
Rain all night long
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Oh, my Lord
Didn’t it rain
[2x]

Then the Lord told Noah to take ‘em two by two.
The ox and the fox and the kangaroo.
The wicked man if he don’t be picked
Leave him there and he might just mend.

[Backup singers repeat “Listen to the rain”]
Soloist: Water rising in the East
And rising in the West
Men groaning in the North
Some moaning in the South
All day
All night

[Back-up singers continue to sing “Listen to the rain” while soloist sings “Oh-o”
Soloist- Just listen to the rain.
How it rains
All day
All night
Mmm-mmm [humming]

Didn't it rain, children
Talk about
Rain all night long
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Oh, my Lord
Didn’t it rain
[2x]

Well, it rained forty days
It rained forty nights
There was no land down there in sight
Noah sent a dove
To find the sign
No more water
But the fire next time

[repeat “Listen to the rain” and “Water rising in the East” lyrics]

Now can I hear you groan, some children
[A singer groans]
Let me hear you moan, some children
[A singer responds: “God gonna trouble the water”]

[Back up singers repeat “Listen to the rain”]

Soloist: Listen how it’s raining
All day
All night
Wo- oh- oh oh oh oh oh

Didn't it rain, children
Talk about
Rain all night long
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Didn’t it
Oh!
Oh, my Lord
Didn’t it rain

GOD PUT A RAINBOW IN THE CLOUD
By Reverend Andrew Jenkins and Irene Spain

When God shut Noah in the grand old ark
He put a rainbow in the cloud
When thunders rolled and the sky was dark
God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud
God put a rainbow in the cloud
When it looked like the sun wouldn't shine anymore
God put a rainbow in the cloud.

Away down yonder in Egypt's sand
God put a rainbow in the cloud
Just to lead His children to the promised land
God put a rainbow in the cloud.

When they put old Daniel in the lion's den,
God put a rainbow in the cloud
Just to prove His promise to the sons of men
God put a rainbow in the cloud.

As a sign by day and a sign by night
God put a rainbow in the cloud
Just to guide His people and keep them right
God put a rainbow in the cloud.

Oh, Jordan deep and Jordan wide
God put a rainbow in the cloud
To lead his people to the other side
God put a rainbow in the cloud.

The background story in Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy is interesting:
This song was made by Daddy Jenkins, as we called him, after a short period of silence. It seemed too quiet, and we soon learned that he was in deep thought. Going to the piano, he came up with "God Put a Rainbow In the Cloud".' He loved the 'blue' note. I wrote it down for him and arranged the music score. It was made one real hot summer afternoon—in August, I believe. The year: 1931.

The song made a good hit with singers. Mahalia Jackson's recording made a good seller, but it had been recorded as 'not belonging to anyone.' SESAC got in touch with me, and as I had the original pencil copy, the song was verified. When I hear it on radio, it makes me so happy, for that is why Daddy made so many grand songs. He never received any remuneration for any of his work—at least not enough to be counted. He always said he could make more, and he wanted the people to sing them and love them. That was pay enough for him."
—Irene Spain Futrelle

the song's copyright is dated 1931, renewed 1959, assigned to Mosie Lister Publishing Company

"Remember that when this (traditional) music came on the scene it was considered WAY OUT THERE and banned from a lot of churches, because it drew HEAVILY on jazz and blues structure. I would hope that we don't limit our artists today like they tried to limit Dorsey when he started it all. The litmus test should not be style, or even emotional response, it should be if God is glorified with the artist's expression. Artists today are using what they hear around them just like Dorsey did."

"The original pre-30's version of this song uses "in the cloud" as it was to have a more darker tone to enlighten the rainbow part in reference to God's first covenant. As the song passed through translation and became less and less a hymn, the words were changed to "in the sky". Particularly, the more blues translation of this song by Mahailia Jackson popularized the ending of "in the sky". Both Mahailia and Sallie interpreted the song to be more upbeat as opposed to it's original slower "folk" version. Sallie would have grown up in a time where both versions were equally known and may have chose to translate the song with both "in the sky" and "in the cloud" for that reason.

This commenter referred to "The original pre-30's version of this song". However, "God Put A Rainbow In The Sky" was actually composed in 1931. My friendly correction to that comment reads "The original 1931 version of this song uses "in the cloud"..."

Text (lyrics only) examples of the 19th century African American Spiritual " can be found at http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=57161.
"Noah's ark" is the theme for that song, but its lyrics are quite different from the song "Noah" ("God Told Noah") which is the focus of this pancocojams post. Here's an excerpt of one of the comments in that discussion thread about that song as posted by masato sakurai, Date: 24 Feb 03 - 07:04 PM

"From Lydia Parrish, Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands (... University of Georgia Press, 1945, 1992, pp. 134-136; with music):

NORAH, HIST THE WINDAH

Norah, hist the windah
Norah, hist the windah
Norah, hist the windah
Hist the windah let the dove come in.

Oh God comman' Bother Norah one day
Oh hist the windah let the dove come in
An' told Brother Norah to build an ark
Hist the windah let the dove come in.
-snip-
"Norah" was the way the name "Norah" was pronounced by 19th century African Americans in certain parts of the South. "Hist" = "hoist" (raise); "windah" (window).

That African American Spiritual may have no connection with the Gospel song "Noah" ("God Told Noah"). However, I wanted to alert readers of this post with that Spiritual.

Rise And Shine (The Lord Told Noah) with lyrics

Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part II of a two part series of songs that have the chorus "Rise, shine, give God the glory".

This post showcases the children's song that contains the chorus "Rise, shine, give God the glory" and tells the story about Noah & the ark. This song's title is usually given as "Rise And Shine" or "Rise And Shine And Give God The Glory". However, this song is also informally known as "The Lord Told Noah", and the "Arky Arky" song.

The children's song "Rise And Shine" is clearly based on the African American Gospel song "Rise, Shine, Give God The Glory".

Three Gospel Versions Of "Rise, Shine, Give God The Glory" (with lyrics)

Edited by Azizi Powell

This is Part I of a two part series of songs that have the chorus "Rise, shine, give God the glory". This post showcases Gospel songs that contain Biblical texts or references to Heaven, but aren't composed specifically for children.

Part II of this series showcases the children's song that contains the chorus "Rise, shine, give God the glory" and tell the story about Noah & the ark. That song is clearly adapted from the African American Gospel song which is the focus of this post. Lyrics: Rise And Shine And Give God The Glory
[as sung by the Hall Johnson Choir in "Green Pastures"]

Rise, and shine, and give God the glory, glory [3x]
Come on and join our jubilee*

Come on mourners and get you ready, ready [3x]
Come on and join our jubilee*

Come on children and don't be weary, weary [3x]

Italics means that I'm not completely certain about this transcription.
In the context of this song "jubilee" means a happy celebration. African Americans used the word "jubilee" to be the time when slavery was officially abolished in the United States.

Rise, shine, give God (the) glory.
Soldiers of the cross.

Do you - think I’d - make a soldier?
Do you - think I’d - make a soldier?
Soldiers of the cross.
(Repeat 2 times)
Sopranos: Do you
All: Do you

The first verse that is found in is
"We are climbing Jacob's ladder, ladder [3x]
Soldiers of the cross"
-snip-
The verse after that which I've often heard sung is
"Every round goes higher, higher [3x]
Soldiers of the cross"
-snip-
In the renditions that I've heard, the "Do you think I'll make a soldier" is sung as the third verse. The lyrics used in the arrangements for Example #2 & Example #3 are are combinations of these lyrics. Example #3 also includes a vamp to the words "Give Him the Glory".

Jubalaires Gospel - Noah

1940's Black Gospel & Pop Vocal Quartet

****
EDITOR'S COMMENTS
"God Told Nicodemus" and "Noah" are Gospel songs that are performed by quartets in the African American Jubilee style. In these performances, "God Told Nicodemus" and "Noah" have the same tune and are performed in the same tempo. As to which song came first, from the uploader notes to another video on the Golden Gate Quartet ["Golden Gate Quartet" - Early Songs at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT3Ly_-o28k -"Noah" is listed as being recorded by that quartet in 1939. The video for "God Told Nicodemus" gives the date 1941 for that song.]

The Wikipedia page for the Golden Gate Quartet indicates that that quartet "was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at the Booker T. Washington College in Norfolk, Virginia" and that one of its founding members, Willie Johnson, "left in 1948 to form The Jubalaires". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gate_Quartet
However, The Jubalaire's Wikipedia page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jubalaires - indicates that "The Jubalaires were an American gospel group active during the 1940s and 1950s. They were playing as the Royal Harmony Singers in Florida as far back as 1936, and under that name reached #10 on the R&B charts on November 14, 1942 with "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition", a song adapted from the speech of a naval chaplain in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor the previous year". The uploader comment for the Jubalaires' rendition of "Noah" provides the information that The Jubalaires were a "1940's Black Gospel & Pop Vocal Quartet".

All of this to say that although I'm not completely sure, it seems most likely that "God Told Nicodemus" uses the tune of "Noah" and not vice versa. Furthermore, it seems likely that the song Noah was first recorded by The Golden Gate Quartet and not by The Jubalaires.

He spoke to Noah and Noah stopped.

I want you to build it three cubics long.
I want you to build it big and strong.

Then Brother Noah began to hew and build.
The ringing of the hammer that judgement.
The hewing of the saw that [said we] repent.
One hundred years he hammered and sawed.
Building the ark by the grace of God.
When the ark was built God's voice was heard.
He said "Now, Noah let me tell you what to do.
I want you to call in the animals two by two.
So he called them in the ark two by two.
[Bears], the oxford, and the kangaroo.
Then he called in [Japeth], and Ham, and Shem.
Then God began to flood the land.

[Hist] the wind, His chariot decree.
He stood on land and stood on the shore.
And declared that time there wouldn't be no more.

God's gonna ride on the wind & tide

* The words that I'm unsure about are placed in brackets. The word that is assumed by listeners is placed in parenthesis, For instance, in the line "Hey to stop, (be) still, and listen to me", I believe that "to" in that line means "got to" and I believe that "be still" is meant, although "be" isn't sung

LYRICS

GOD TOLD NICODEMUS
(As performed by The Golden Gate Quartet)

Chorus:
God told Nicodemus, God told Nicodemus
God, oh yes He did, He told Nicodemus a man he must-a be born again
Well-a God told Nicodemus, God told Nicodemus
God, oh yes He did, He told Nicodemus a man he must-a be born again
Well there was a man among the Pharisees
By the name of Nicodemus who did not believe
Same Nicodemus came to God by night
Talkin' 'bout religion from the human sight
He brought along his silver, diamonds, and gold
Wanted to buy his way to Heaven and save his soul

Repeat Chorus

Well the same Nicodemus came a runnin' hard
Said "Has anybody here done seen the Lord?
I want to buy some 'ligion, but what will it cost
To get myself to Heaven 'fore my soul be lost?
Then my God spoke, He spoke so sweet
Sounded like the shuffle of angels feet
He said "Marvel thou man, if you want to be wise
You got to believe and be baptized"

Repeat Chorus

Then old Nicodemus was taken back
Cause God done told him 'bout the natural fact
He said "Marvel thou man, if you want to be wise
You got to believe and be baptized"
Old Nicodemus was taken back
Cause God done told him 'bout the natural fact
He said "I don't understand! I want to know
How can be born when he's old?"
Then my God spoke, His voice did ring
Sounded like the shuffle of angels wings
He said, "Marvel thou man, if you want to be wise
You got to believe and be baptized"

Repeat Chorus (x2)

Well-a God told Nicodemus, God told Nicodemus
God, oh yes He did, He told Nicodemus a man he must-a be born again
I said man you must-a be born again
We know that man you must-a be born again

INFORMATION ABOUT THE JUBALAIRES
Here's information about The Jubailaires from their Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jubalaires
The Jubalaires were an American gospel group active during the 1940s and 1950s. They were playing as the Royal Harmony Singers in Florida as far back as 1936, and under that name reached #10 on the R&B charts on November 14, 1942 with "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition", a song adapted from the speech of a naval chaplain in response to the attack on Pearl Harbour the previous year. In 1946, they secured a spot on Arthur Godfrey's CBS radio show. Willie Johnson left the Golden Gate Quartet to take the lead of the group in 1948, and in 1950 the band appeared in the musical comedy film Duchess of Idaho.

Much of their music was issued by King Records, some initially on their "Queen Records" label (devoted to African-American music) that was subsequently re-issued on the King label

Here's an excerpt from the uploader statement from another video of this same song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvoTT3t-Ois
The jubilee harmonie sound always got them compared to the Mills Brothers or the Delta Rhythm Boys, but that's about like hearing Jerry Lee Lewis & because it's rock & roll saying it's like Chuck Berry.

The Jubilaires brought their own stylization to the four-part harmonies act, remaining in the gospel & spiritual camp unlike most such groups seeking pop group status. - nipsipone; Apr 27, 2008 ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvoTT3t-Ois&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL6C96C77F922F6F8E

wolwerone-o I'm agree on the message, no comparison with poor rappers of today, i was only talking about their physical movements and speeching words technique incredibly actual. Great !!:)
