PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
I'm am a long inactive member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc (Gamma Zeta chapter, 1967).

I recognize that songs and chants and other cultural indices of historically Black Greek letter organizations shouldn't be performed by people who aren't affiliated with those specific organizations. However, as a self-descripted community folklorist, I consider these songs and chants and other features of those organizations to part of African American history and culture that are worthy of documenting, studying, and sharing in blog posts such as those that I publish on pancocojams.

Please help archive this culture by adding to the information about this song so that it will be continue to be known now and in the future.

* This transcription is partly
the result of the incomplete captions that are given in this video and partly my attempt to write down the words from listening to the singing.

I haven't found any other information about or examples of this song online or in any books. For the cultural record, if you know this Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. song, please verify or correct this transcription and share information about this song and the movements for the "walk" (step? / stroll?) that is done while singing it.

Also, is this the only song that is sung for Alpha Xi's chapter's "Old Walk" and do (did) other chapters of  Kappa Alpha Psi perform this old walk and/or other old walks?

When was the "Alpha Xi Old Walk" song and stroll/step first performed?

I notice that the verse of this Kappa Alpha Psi song that mentions three of the other historically Black Greek letter fraternities that are members of the National Pan Hellenic Council but doesn't mention  Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Does that mean this "Old Walk" song was composed before Iota Phi Theta Fraternity was founded in 1963 and was never updated to include that fraternity?

Also, I think that the "long and short and long short" words at the end serve the same purpose as the left right marching directions in military cadences. Is this correct?

This is Part IV of this pancocojams series. This post showcases six videos of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. probates.

I'm particularly interested in documenting whether one or more designated member/s of that fraternity holds a decorated staff or some other object and whether neophytes carry a shield during their probate.

However, these videos are given without any descriptions or any comments.

That post presents my conclusions about this custom based on my informal online research (i.e. by watching a number of YouTube videos).

Documenting how historically Black Greek letter fraternity and sorority probates wouldn't be complete without information about the close contact processional styles that the neophytes have when they enter the probate performance area.

I believe that those close contact styles were/are influenced by the South African Venda's [ethnic population] Domba dance which is also known as "the python dance". THE BLACK AMERICAN CUSTOM OF WEARING KENTE CLOTH STOLE/S DURING UNIVERSITY GRADUATIONS
by Azizi Powell (latest revision May 25, 2025)

"BACKGROUND
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kente_cloth [retrieved May 25, 2025]
"Kente refers to a Ghanaian textile made of hand-woven strips of silk and cotton.[1] Historically the fabric was worn in a toga-like fashion among the Asante, Akan and Ewe people. According to Asante oral tradition, it originated from Bonwire in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. In modern day Ghana, the wearing of kente cloth has become widespread to commemorate special occasions, and kente brands led by master weavers are in high demand.

Due to the popularity of kente cloth patterns, production of mass-produced prints with the kente patterns have become popular throughout West Africa, and by extension the whole of Africa. Globally, the print is used in the design of academic stoles in graduation ceremonies worn mostly by black people in the United States and Canada."...

****
WHY KENTE CLOTH GRADUATION STOLES ARE WORN IN THE UNITED STATES
Since the 1970s in the United States, kente cloth has become a widely recognized short cut symbol of African heritage. Kente cloth is the most widely known example and often the only known example of traditional African fabric in the United States.

There are countless contemporary usages of kente cloth designs in the United States including as clothing fabric, book marks, and Kwanzaa ornaments. However, the most widely adopted use of kente cloth in the United States has been Black Americans choosing to wear one or more kente cloth stole/s with the standard cap and gown (robe) during graduation ceremonies. This custom is especially found among Black Americans who are graduating from a Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU), although Black Americans graduating from a Predominately White Institution (PMI) may also choose to wear one or more kente cloth graduation stole/s. While wearing a kente cloth stole is a voluntary decision, it has become traditional to do so among those graduates of either a HBCU or a PMI (Predominately White Institutions) who are members of a historically Black Greek letter sorority or fraternity.*

The kente cloth stole represents the graduate's connection to and pride in their African heritage, and their pride in their accomplishment of graduating. If they are members of a historically Black Greek lettered fraternity or sorority, the favored stole is in the two colors of their organization and includes that fraternity's or sorority's three Greek letters.
-snip-
*Members of these organization that aren't Black may also follow that custom of wearing one or more kente cloth stole in their graduation ceremony.

****
DESCRIPTIONS OF KENTE CLOTH GRADUATION STOLES IN THE UNITED STATES

"Kente cloth is a traditional fabric of the Akan people of Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Togo West Africa. The custom in the United States of African Americans wearing kente cloth as stoles during graduation (particularly from universities, but sometimes also from high school and from middle school) is an adaptation of the ways that kente was traditionally worn. Since 2012, it has become customary for many African Americans who are graduating from universities (colleges) to wear a particular design of kente cloth stoles that has a green, gold, red, and black color combination. Because those are the colors for the Pan-African flag, I refer to this kente graduation stole as the "pan-African kente graduation stole".

Instead of or in addition to wearing this green, gold, red, and black colored kente cloth stole, some members of historically Black Greek letter fraternities or sororities (regardless of their race or ethnicity) often choose to wear one or more customized kente cloth stole/s. A customized graduation stole has the two colors that represent that Greek letter organization and also includes that fraternity's or sorority's three Greek letters (representing that organization's name). Graduates who wear the pan-African kente graduation stole and/or their fraternity or sorority's customized kente stole may also wear other academic stoles that they have earned. based on my YouTube video searches, it doesn't appear to be a custom for  African American university students in general or for members of Black Greek letter organizations to wear pan-kente cloth stoles or customized kente cloth stoles at any other time other than during these graduation ceremonies and after graduation stepping or strolling performances.

Much less frequently, kente cloth stoles may be worn by Black graduates in the United States at other levels such as children graduating from elementary school or teenagers graduating from high school.

The green, gold, red, and black pan-African kente cloth graduation stole seems to be the standard kente graduation stole for African Americans as a whole since at least 2012. It appears to be customary for some members of historically Black Greek letter organizations who are graduating from a university to also wear a customized stole for their fraternity or sorority as well as any academic stole that they have earned in addition to or in place of that pan-African kente graduation stole. The customized fraternity or sorority kente graduation stoles have that organization's two colors, the organization's name, and its three Greek letters (such as Alpha Phi Alpha ΑΦΑ).

In the admittedly informal YouTube searches that I've conducted, I haven't found any videos that show kente cloth stoles being worn by members of any  historically Black Greek letter organizations at any time other than for their university graduation ceremony and their stepping, strolling, hopping, singing performances that may spontaneously occur immediately after that formal graduation ceremony.

The earliest YouTube video that I've found that shows a member of a historically Black fraternity/sorority wearing a customized kente graduation stole is Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (video published August 10, 2010;  https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2022/03/some-members-of-delta-sigma-theta.html.

Two other early examples of kente cloth graduation stoles are Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2022/03/some-members-of-phi-beta-sigma.html (video published in May 2011) and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (published in June 2011) https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2022/03/some-members-of-omega-psi-phi-fratrnity.html .

Prior to around 2010 or 2011 members of historically Black Greek letter organizations wore customized graduation stoles made out of some shiny materials [?] or made out of cloth. Graduation stoles made out of kente cloth began to be seen in those videos from 2010 and 2011 on, although those customized graduation stoles made from other fabrics appear to still be worn by some members of those historically Black Greek organizations (BGLOs).

INFORMATION ABOUT BIZ MARKIE
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biz_Markie [retrieved on January 5, 2022]
"Marcel Theo Hall (April 8, 1964 – July 16, 2021),[3] known professionally as Biz Markie, was an American rapper, DJ, and record producer. Markie was best known for his 1989 single "Just a Friend", which became a top 40 hit in several countries. In 2008, "Just a Friend" made No. 100 on VH1's list of the 100 greatest hip hop songs of all time.[4] Markie was sometimes referred to as the "Clown Prince of Hip Hop".[5][6][7]

****
SUMMARY OF THE VIDEO SCENE BEFORE THE RAP BEGINS
[unofficial transcript by Azizi Powell]

A group of Black young men are seated on a park bench telling “your mama” jokes. (This is a friendly exchange and not a real rippin [insult] contest).

Biz Markie –“Yo, your moms is so poor that she went to McDonalds and put a shake on layaway.”

[laughter]

2nd man- “Well, your mother is so old that she knew Central Park when it was a plant.”

[laughter]

3rd man – Your mom’s hair so nappy that she needs to take pain killers to comb it.”

[laughter]

Two attractive young womens strut toward the park bench.

One of the men says: “Oh, yo, yo. Look at that, man.” The men make other admiring comments about the women who stop at the park bench. One of the comments is “Ooh, You got what I need”.

The women leave, and one of the men says “Oh, it’s all of that baby? More comments are made, but Biz Markie says “Yo, yo, forget about them girls. A couple of the men say “Why? What’s up?

Biz Markie says, “I got a little story to tell you”
And then begins his rap.

LYRICS - JUST A FRIEND
Songwriters: IBRAHIM, CAIREL ADRIN BIN/ISHAK, JOHAN BIN/HALL, MARCEL THEO PKA BIZ MARKIE/LIZAARD, LEAF

Have you ever met a girl that you tried to date

But a year to make love she wanted you to wait

Let me tell ya a story of my situation

I was talkin' to this girl from the U.S. nation

The way that I met her was on tour at a concert

She had long hair and a short miniskirt

I just got onstage drippin', pourin' with sweat

I was walkin' through the crowd and guess who I met

I whispered in her ear, "Come to the picture booth

So I can ask you some questions to see if you are a hundred proof"

I asked her her name, she said blah-blah-blah

She had 9/10 pants and a very big bra

I took a couple of flicks and she was enthused

I said, "How do you like the show?"

She said, "I was very amused"

I started throwin' bass, she started throwin' back mid-range

But when I sprung the question, she acted kind of strange

Then when I asked, "Do ya have a man," she tried to pretend

She said, "No I don't, I only have a friend"

Come on, I'm not even goin' for it

This is what I'm goin' sing

You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend
And you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend

So I took blah-blah's word for it at this time

I thought just havin' a friend couldn't be no crime

'Cause I have friends and that's a fact

Like Agnes, Agatha, Germaine, and Jacq

Forget about that, let's go into the story

About a girl named blah-blah-blah that adored me

So we started talkin', getttin' familiar

Spendin' a lot of time so we can build up

A relationship or some understanding

How it's gonna be in the future we was plannin'

Everything sounded so dandy and sweet

I had no idea I was in for a treat

After this was established, everything was cool

The tour was over and she went back to school

I called every day to see how she was doin'

Everytime that I called her it seemed somethin' was brewin'

I called her and a guy picked up, and then I called again

I said, "Yo, who was that?" "Oh, he's just a friend"

Don't gimme that, don't ever gimme that

Jus' bust this
You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend
And you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend

So I came to her college on a surprise visit

To see my girl that was so exquisite

It was a school day, I knew she was there

The first semester of the school year

I went to a gate to ask where was her dorm

This guy made me fill out a visitor's form

He told me where it was and I as on my way

To see my baby doll, I was happy to say

I arrrived in front of the dormitory

Yo, could you tell me where is door three?

They showed me where it was for the moment

I didn't know I was in for such an event

So I came to her room and opened the door

Oh, snap! Guess what I saw?

A fella tongue-kissin' my girl in the mouth,

I was so in shock my heart went down south

So please listen to the message that I say

Don't ever talk to a girl who says she just has a friend

EXPLANATION OF SOME OF THE SLANG FOUND IN THIS RAP
"[ask you some questions] "to see if you are a hundred proof"=
to see if you're for real

"I asked her her name, she said blah-blah-blah"= "Blah-blah-blah" is a substitute for the girl's name which Biz Markie isn't sharing.

"She had 9/10 pants" = She wore pants that were a size 9/10.

"I took a couple of flicks" = I took a couple of pictures (with a camera).

"I started throwin' bass, she started throwin' back mid-range" = Biz Markie and the girl started singing together.

"it seemed somethin' was brewin' = "it seemed like something was going on in the background".

"Yo, who was that?" = "Yo" here [as well as in the introductory video scene] means "Hey".

Jus' bust this = [in the context of this rap], means "let's continue with this rap".

"Oh, snap!" = in Standard American English, this is the equivalent of "Oh shucks!", but the word "snap" substitutes for another word that means "crap" (manure).
-snip-
Additions & corrections to these slang explanations and are welcome.

"I dunno, I am from that era and I personally been spittin' since 1987, and I've always thought it was corny af. My opinion of course, as we all have them. Corny doesn't have a specific time frame or era. I think it was more so the singing and the video that made it corny for me. The subject matter was solid, though, as I'm sure it is relatable to some people. And also, I would like to clarify - corny isn't always a bad thing. In fact, the exploitation of "corny" sh-t* can be brilliant and actually appealing as it usually induces laughter and feelings of "get the f—k* out of here' type joy. He was always corny to me, but that is what made him was so appealing to people - for whatever reason."

ADDENDUM #1
This rap is about a guy "being played" by a girl. "Being played" means "to be taken advantaged of". In this context, a girl only pretending to be seriously interested in a man and acting as though she is only seeing him, but actually cheating on him with another man.

But notice how CLEAN this rap is compared to the type of Hip-Hip records that are promoted nowadays.

Yes, one of the Your mama rips in the beginning of the video talked bad about nappy hair, but there wasn't anything vulgar about those rips. And the closest that that rap got to anything sexual was "tongue kissing". Also check out the fact that the girl who was playin Biz Markie was in college, and not baby's mama.

Times change, and not always for the best.

[complete article; no author or date cited]
"You’ve heard the Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend,” but did you ever realize that the music video features members of Kappa Alpha Psi?

“Just A Friend” was Biz Markie’s most successful single that reached the #9 position on the Billboard charts in 1989. The music video follows Biz as he falls in love with a girl and finds out she is cheating on him with a man on a nearby college campus. Biz goes to surprise the girl at her university and walks in on what he describes “A fella tongue kissin’ my girl on her mouth” in her dorm room.

As Biz is walking through the campus there is a whole scene at the 3:40 mark with a bunch of Kappas doing cane routines around him on the yard. They are rocking peak late 80s style and holding it down for their brothers with their Kappa Kanes!"

Comments About Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.'s Shoulder Shimmy

Edited by Azizi Powell

Latest revision- Nov. 3, 2021 (Title change & additional comments)

This is Part II of a two part pancocojams series about Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. strolls which are performed with their signature shoulder shimmy.

Part II presents a brief article excerpt about Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. This post also includes selected comments from the discussion threads of several YouTube videos of members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. performing strolls with their signature shoulder  shimmy.

These videos from 2007 - 2021 are only a small sample of
YouTube videos on Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc's strolls. I randomly selected these particular YouTube videos in large part because of their discussion threads more than because of the videos themselves.

Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2021/10/fivexamples-of-youtube-videos-of-kappa.html for Part I of this pancocojams series. That post showcases five videos of members of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity performing strolls that include their signature shoulder shimmy.
Selected comments from the discussion thread for only one of those showcased videos are included in Part II of this pancocojams series.

The content of this post is presented for historical, cultural, entertainment, and aesthetic purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

Thanks to all those who are featured in these videos and thanks to their videogaphers. Thanks also to the publishers of these videos on YouTube. Also, thanks to all those who are quoted in this post.

WARNING
The lyrics for many but not all Hip-Hop/R&B records-including those that are used for historically Black Greek letter fraternity and sorority strolls- contain profanity, and/or a form of the n-word. and may also include lyrics that are sexually explicit.

Pancocojams is a family friendly blog that usually doesn't post songs that include such lyrics. However, those
videos with these songs are included because I'm focusing on the subject of historically Black fraternity and sorority strolls for historical and cultural purposes and it's impossible to fully document strolls without including these types of videos.

https://www.watchtheyard.com/kappas/shimmy-kappa-alpha-psi/ 90s Nupe Throwback: This Is What Kappa Alpha Psi Looked Like Before The Shimmy

"The younger members might not realize it but the 90s were a golden era to be a Nupe!

Check out this compilation video of what it looked like to be a Nupe during the 90s. The video is made up of footage from the Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at Wilberforce University and shows everything from Scrollers practicing, to a probate and an array of step shows and yard shows from throughout the decade. We have to mention that the Kappa Kane is something that was highly practiced back in the day and every member had to be a skilled practitioner of the art of twirling. This is what Kappa looked like before the shimmy.

Share this with someone who crossed Kappa in the 80s or 90s and make their day!"....

"The young Nupes, don’t want to put the time in to learn.  The shimmy is getting boring. Please bring back the Kane’s.  There are plenty of videos you can watch to assist you in just getting the basic steps down.  Even the sigma are looking better than the Kappa’s. The Kane’s made the Kappa’s unique, now when it comes to stepping they look so blend."

"Kappas stop that silly stroll. Step like men. That from a former Polemarch and Stepmaster at Zeta Chapter (where StrollerCkub/pledging started). 42 years in and tired of seeing this usher wannabe move"

"I soooooooo misssssss thisssssss!!  The D9 was this shiznit in the 90s!!  And, I enjoyed how the Nupes got down back then.  There was no shimmying and there was Massive slickassed cane work.  Where has that gone!?  Anyway, I re♎all when this show first aired and I do so fondly.  My peers and I were proud of it, Skool Daze, and A Dif'rent World. They were all three potent to us.  I'm glad this video is out here so this generation can at least see how things used to be when they were Qlassic.  #GoodJobCrimson'11....."
-snip-
Pancocojams Editor's Note: Actually, there was a very brief shoulder shimmy move at 1:34 to 1:38 in this video, although the men stood erect doing it which is different from the way it is performed in 2021.

"Old school Nupes right there... These damn new Kappas with all the feminized shimmying and posing need to take a look at they history and bring the candy cane stepping back..... Ijs"

"This was hott!  This Is/Was what I reQall from y'all.  Speaking as a True Bruh and a Brother to all The D9, I am Very impressed with this Nupe's skills.  He would likely get what I've been screaming for years re: how far too many of our [D9's] newer members have strayed from the historical stand out, or Owt for My Frat, style of our different orgs.  Now, many of our ladies step with very little distinction.  Several of our guys mimic The Bruhs' swims/kicks/slides/even hops.  And, almost No younger Nupes or Sigmas seem to know how to twirl their canes.  The latter rarely even have them anymore.  The former often carry them around their campuses but still have No klue how to use them.  I'm Not here to bash.  I love The D9!!  I'm simply paying due respect to my fellow '11 D9 Brother and suggesting that we stress & teach our performance traditions to our newer members.  Perhaps, they require this in order that they may return to the time when we took pride in stepping with precision, style, rhythm, and distinction.  None of us, okay except maybe the Sigmas-sorry but it's true, blatantly patterned our style after any other org's signature stuff.  I respected, enjoyed, and was motivated by that.  Now, I miss it because it's missing.  This Nupe Brother gets bizzzzzeeee 1x with his topnotch kanework and I salute him for it.  I hope Mannnnnnny younger Nupes watch this video and maybe put a bit of a moratorium on all the shimmying.  It's lazy, at least somewhat feminine, and Not on what Nupes once relied to get thru a show.  Precise, smooth, stepping and kanework was!  Please find your way back home, young Nupes.  Also, everybody Stop being jackasses when making folks!!  Pretty soon, None of our orgs will be able to afford our insurance and then None of us will have to worry about any of what I've written because we'll all be "historical" as in defunct due to civil and criminal litigation.  I believe Strongly in ensuring that folks earn, Not buy, their way into our Family.  However, I also believe that discretion starts with members Not with candidates who are put through a process which we control and which often leaves them unwell but then are told to behave/walk/look/be discreet.  It seems that'd be a Much easier thing for them to do had they Not had to endure quite as much as they had the night before and the night before that and so on.  Be smart, D9 Family.  Or, be dismantled.  That's about where we are now.  Anyway, great display of ol'skool Nupedom and I appreciate this Brother sharing.  And, with that all said, I'm Owt!!

#♎πŸ’œπŸ’›IsπŸ’ͺ!!

RQQ to The S.O.B.A.T.!!  And, peace and love to The D9."
