INFORMATION ABOUT HAMBONE WILLIE NEWBERN
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hambone_Willie_Newbern
"Hambone Willie Newbern (1899–1947)[1] was an American guitar-playing country blues musician.[2] His home community was in the Brownsville, Tennessee area along Tennessee State Route 19.[3] He was reported to have played with Yank Rachell and Sleepy John Estes (from whom most of our knowledge of Hambone was gained) in the 1920s and 1930s.[1] He recorded one of the earliest known versions of the blues standard "Rollin' and Tumblin'" in 1929. He only recorded six tracks in total, which also included, "She Could Toodle-Oo" and "Hambone Willie's Dreamy-Eyed Woman's Blues."[1]

Newbern was a hot-tempered man who eventually was beaten to death in a prison brawl, around 1947."

LYRICS- SHE COULD TOOTLE OO
(Hambone Willie Newbern)

I once knew a little girl.
She wore a hole in her britches
Come walkin right down the street.
Every time she go she go toodley oodley.
She goes to everybody she meets.
I was walkin down the street the other day.
I seen the same ole girl myself/
And I give that girl a tote no nickel short.
"A toodle oo" said that gal.

Aw, she could toodle oodle.
Aw she toodle oodle.
That’s all the poor girl do.
Aw, she could toodle oodle.
Yes she toodle oodle.
That’s all she could do.

Her mama phoned the doctor
Says come here quick
Cause I believe I got to have my daughter check‑a‑check.
Yes she toodle oodle.
Yes she toodle oodle.
Toodle oodle oodle oo.

Aw, she could toodle oodle.
Boy she toodle oodle.
Toodle oodle oodle oo.
Aw, she could toodle oodle oo.
Yes she toodle oodle oo.
Toodle oo oo oo

Well the doctor came
Says "I never seen such.
Your daughter got the fever.
She toodle‑oo too much.
She could toodle oodle.
Yes, she toodle oodle.
Toodle oodle oodle oo.

[instrumental]

Yes she toodle oo.
Aw, she can toodle.
Boy, she can toodle oo.
Aw, she could toodle oodle oo.

Toodle‑oo in the summer, in the fall.
Got so cold she couldn't toodle‑oo at all.

Aw, she could toodle oodle.
Yes she toodle oodle.
That’s all the poor girl do.

Her mama's in the kitchen cooking in a stew
Me around the house just a toodle‑oodle‑oo

[instrumental]

Aw she toodle oo.
Yes she toodle oo.
toodle oodle oodle oo.
Aw she toodle oo.
Boy, she can toodle oo.
That’s all the poor girl do

Well she went to leave me.
Went and stumped her shoe.
Fell down and broke her little toodle oodle oo.
She can toodle oo.
She can toodle oo.
Toodle oodle oo.

NOTES ABOUT THIS SONG
This song is about a female street walker (a prostitute).

The word "toodle oo" usually means "good bye" and sometimes it means "hello". However, in most of the song "She Could Toodle-oo", that word is a society acceptable substitute for the curse word that means "engaging in sexual intercourse".

In the sentence "broke her little toodle oodle oo", "toodle oodle oo" means her butt.

LYRICS - ROLL AND TUMBLE BLUES
(Hambone Willie Newbern)

And I rolled and I tumbled
and I cried the whole night long
And I rosed this morning mama
and I didn't know right from wrong

Did you ever wake up
nd find your dough‑roller gone
And you wrings your hands
and you cry the whole day long

And I told my woman Lord
[just] before I left her town
Don't she let nobody
tear her barrelhouse down

And I fold my arms Lord
and I [slowly] walked away
Says that's all right sweet mama
your trouble going to come some day

Tern Explanations:
your "dough roller" = your female lover

"don't she let nobody tear her barrelhouse down" = don't let her have sex with anyone else.

Summary from Muddy Waters - Rollin' & Tumblin' ( Chess 1950 )

cojwat, Uploaded on Apr 25, 2010

Recorded in the year 1950 at Chess label. There is also other versions of this song here in YouTube, but they are all worth of listening. Muddy Waters is the Father of Chicago Blues and absolutely one of the greatest blues musicians.

I hope owners of the rights want to see this as an honor to this artist, which it really is. And same goes to these random photos, paintings and artworks, which I have found from net.
My hope is that everyone can just listen to this fine musician. Enjoy!

Its so nice, that you can still buy these recordings on CD!

LYRICS - ROLLIN AND TUMBLIN
(as performed by Muddy Waters)

Well, I rolled and I tumbled,
Cried the whole night long.
Well, I rolled and I tumbled,
Cried the whole night long.
Well, I woke up this mornin,
Didn't know right from wrong.

Well, I told my baby,
Before I left that town.
Well, I told my baby,
Before I left that town.
Well, don't you let nobody,
Tear my barrelhouse down.

Well, ahh, mmm-hmmm,
Owww, oww ooo, aww, oww, oh.
Aaa, mmm-hmmm, oww, oh oh oh
Owww, oww ooo, aww, oww, oh.

Well, if the river was whiskey,
And I was a divin duck.
Well, if the river was whiskey,
And I was a divin duck.
Well, I would dive to the bottom,
Never would I come up.

Well, I could a had a religion,
This bad old thing instead.
Well, I could a had a religion,
This bad old thing instead.
Well, all whiskey and women,
Would not let me pray.

Example #3: Elmore James - Rollin' and Tumblin' [1960]

shortrax, Uploaded on Aug 18, 2008

Fiery version of the blues standard by Mississippi slide guitar legend Elmo. It is basically the same tune as Robert Johnson's Travellin' Riverside Blues, but even that was not the earliest version.
