This is Part III of an ongoing pancocojams series on lines dances performed at Black (African American) cookouts, wedding receptions, and other get-togethers (informal social gatherings).

This post provides information about "the Bust Stop" line dance and showcases a YouTube video of Charlie Green, a Chicago, Illinois DJ, leading a group of people doing the "Bus Stop" line dance in 1982.

I haven't come across any YouTube videos of people doing the Bus stop (as a couple's dance) and not the Bus stop line dance. If you are aware of any videos of this, please share a link in the comment section for this post. Thanks.

Stephanie Braxton may have meant her comment to be a general reflection on Black students dancing at a majority White school in the early 1970s. The Bus Stop dance and the Bus Stop line dance wasn’t created until 1975.

It doesn't have the same meaning as historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities steppin[g], but is closer to the genre of social dancing called "Chicago Stepping". The words that my are explanations of those lyrics.

This line dance is performed to The People's Choice's 1975 Funk/Disco record "Do It Anyway You Wanna". The words "Do it anyway you wanna do it, Do it anyway you want" are the only lyrics in that record. 

The line dancers follow Charlie Green's directions (i.e. they clap, shout, freeze, do the dances "The Uncle Willie", and "Twine Time" etc. when he directs them to. (I'm not sure if my transcription "Get out those Twines" is correct.

Additions and corrections to my transcription are very welcome.

I spent a summer in Nigeria where I personally observed numerous Yoruba dance performances and can unequivocally say that there is definitely a strong link between African music and dance and that of the African American and Caribbean culture. This is  perfectly understandable. We have our origins in Mother Africa."

The saying "Get in there" is used in the title of this video. I believe that in the context of this video, the African American Vernacular English meaning of "get in there" (and "getting in there") is "to do something exceptionally well"; "to arrive at the pinnacle of performance".

"Unc" ("unk") is a shortened form of the word "uncle", a referent for a brother of one's father or mother and to an aunt's husband. In addition, in African American Vernacular English "unc" ("unk) is also a midly affectionate informal abbreviation for the relationship term "uncle". "An "Unc" is an African American male relative or male non-relative who is middle age or older. "Unks" and who is known to dress, act, and talk certain ways. For example, an unc is known to wear certain types of clothes, particularly clothes that might have been "fly" ("hip") some time ago, but are out of fashion now, or are inappropriate when they ae worn by older men. Uncs also are known to act & talk in certain characteristics ways that many younger people consider to be both humorous and irritating.

An "ultimate uncle" is a man who epitomizes the looks and actions of  an unc.

An oldhead is another referent for "unc".

In the context of this discussion, "nasty" is a compliment. It means something similar to the African American vernacular use of "stank" as a description of dancing which means that a person danced so well he or she sweated so much that they smelled.

SHOWCASE EXAMPLE #2 - Al Brown's TuneToppers - The Madison - Mo' Madison 1960

Before The Twist for a brief period of time the dance craze was line dancing to "The Madison". This song and Ray Bryant's "Madison Time" were both chart topper's at the same time, This song unfortunately has now been overlooked as Ray Bryant's version now is the one that people most remember. This is both side A and side B. Here is the dance being performed in 1960.

Jim Weaver (also in the video ) choreographed this soul line dance to Wiz Khalifa's song titled Black and Yellow.
