LYRICS -DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY "SWEETHEART SONG"

She may be an Omega Sweetheart
Or the Dream Girl of A Phi A.
She may wear a Kappa diamond
Her love may a Sigma be
But if she wears the Delta Symbol,
Then her first love is DST.

She may be an Omega Sweetheart
Or the Dream Girl of A Phi A.
She may wear a Kappa diamond
Her love may a Sigma be
But if she wears the Delta Symbol,
Then her first love is DST.

Here are the names of the four historically Black Greek letter fraternities that are mentioned in this song:
Omega = Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
A Phi A = Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Kappa + Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Sigma = Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
-snip-
These fraternities are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), also known as "The Divine Nine". Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is one of four historically Black Greek letter sororities that are members of the Divine Nine. The other sororities are Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. is the fifth historically Black Greek letter fraternity that is a member of the Divine Nine. It's likely that the Delta's Sweetheart Song was composed before Iota Phi Theta Fraternity was founded in 1963 and not updated after that fraternity joined the National Pan-Hellenic Council in 1997.

The Lambda Zeta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sweetheart Song

At the end of every semester students graduate from every university looking towards the next step in their lives. Members of Greek fraternities and sororities, before saying their final farewells to the campus, set out a final march to signify the end of an era at their respective school.

At the University of Alabama this final step has become an iconic gesture on the steps of Coleman Coliseum. It's only fitting it's captured for posterity.

EXPLANATION FOR THE WORDS "HER FIRST LOVE IS DST"
Here are comment exchanges from two YouTube videos of the Deltas' Sweetheart Song in which commenters question why the "first love" wasn't God or Jesus.

"It you dont kno and/or cant listen..Don't take it out of context. It's a "sweetheart" song from the days when men would serenade their sorority girl. This song  only suggests that while she may have a fraternity beau, she loves her sisters and puts them and her own org before her man.  Not school. Not fam. NOT God smh."

  1. "The Sweetheart Of Sigma Chi" is the first known "sweetheart" song that is attributed to a Greek letter fraternity. Here's information about that song from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetheart_of_Sigma_Chi:

"Often called the most beloved and popular of college fraternity songs, "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" was written in 1911[1] by Byron D. Stokes (Albion Class of 1913) and F. Dudleigh Vernor (Albion '14). Stokes had written the words while in class one June day that year, and presented them that afternoon to Vernor, who was practicing the piano in a local house, and composed the music at that time. The song has since become a favorite among ballroom orchestras and was used in two movie musicals of the same name, in 1933 and 1946. When asked about the song's inspiration, Stokes replied, "The 'Sweetheart' is the symbol for the spiritual ingredient in brotherhood. It was the Sigma Chi fraternity itself that inspired the song. I wrote the words not long after my initiation, and the magic of our Ritual with its poetic overtones and undertones was, I suppose, the source of my inspiration". The manuscript of the song remained on campus until 2007 when it was lost and not recovered.

The song was first sung by Harry Clifford (Albion '11), who later drew the cover for the original sheet music published by Vernor's brother Harry Vernor (Albion '13). The song became a big band hit, has been performed in film and television, and continues to be recognized around the world. Through the years, many people have tried to pin the title of "original sweetheart" on many women; however, the two most likely candidates are Elsie Munro (Vernor's girlfriend) and Helen Beall Russell, who lived next to the old chapter house. Either way, since then the concept of the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi has gained popularity all across the world, with the adoption of sweethearts at every chapter and even an international sweetheart. 1. In contrast to the woman who is described in the "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" song, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's "Sweetheart Song" focuses on one members or more than one member or all members of that sorority.

During a Delta's wedding reception, the bride sits in a chair in the middle of a circle that is formed by other Deltas standing and singing the Delta Sigma Theta "Sweetheart Song".

The Delta Sigma Theta "Sweetheart Song" may also be sung by members of that sorority immediately after a university formal graduation ceremony. The new graduates stand surrounded by their sorors who honor their accomplishments by singing that song for them.

Examples of the videos in this pancocojams post showcase both of these occasions when members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. sing their "Sweetheart Song".
