DEFINITIONS FOR THE WORD "ATE"/ "ATE THAT"

Ate That

The exact origin of the term "ate that" is unknown, but on July 11th, 2008, Urban Dictionary[1] user Cazza759 posted the earliest known definition for "ate that," writing, "did a great job; pulled it off well; had a lot of success with something. Used by teens in the projects of Queens, NY, and probably elsewhere in NYC." This then became the top definition on the site with nearly 1,400 likes in 13 years."...
-snip-
"The projects" in that quote means is from the term "housing projects" which is another referent for low income, government subsidized housing developments in urban areas of the United States.

There's also another urban dictionary entry from 2019 that defines "ate" as "did that".

Definition #3 -Pancocojams Editor:
Here's my definition for this vernacular meaning of "ate":

"Ate [verb]; "eat" [verb] "ate it" [verbal phrase] = a superlative performance, something that is (or "was") done so well that it can't be topped (as there's nothing left for anyone to compete against)"

**
Pancocojams Editor:
"Ate" and left no crumbs (verb) - to do something so exceptionally well that there's no onecould do anything better (i.e. There's nothing left to do.)

**
It's likely that "ate that up" was the earliest use of this meaning and "ate the plate clean" (and similar extended phrases) followed along with the shortened words "ate" and "eating".

Notice that this definition of "ate" has the exact same meaning as the African American Vernacular English term "killed it" ("slayed", "murdered it", "demolished it" etc.).

This definition of "ate" also has a very similar meaning as the vernacular term "mic drop" that is used to indicate that something that had been said or done is so very impressive that it cannot be topped (no one can say or do anything better).

The opposite meaning of "ate" (did something exceptionally well) is "really sucked".

Definition for "Ate that" = did a superlative job (at something)

Added June 21, 2022- Here's an example of this meaning of the word "ate": from the 2014 discussion thread of Big Freedia's song "Explode" that Beyonce sampled in her June 20, 2022 single "Break My Soul":

****
ONE PROBABLE SOURCE FOR THIS VERNACULAR MEANING OF "ATE" ("EATING" etc.)
An
early source for this meaning of "ate" and "eating" may be the African American Vernacular English slang phrase "to eat somebody's lunch", although that phrase doesn't mean the exact same thing as this "new" meaning of "ate" or "eat". Here's information about "ate someone's lunch" from https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/eat+their+lunch

"eat someone's lunch"
[Slang] to best someone; to defeat, outwit, or win against someone. (Like a school bully taking away children's lunches and eating them.) The upstart ABC Computer Company is eating IBM's lunch.

These comments are from various YouTube discussion threads for stomp & shake cheerleading videos.

However, the terms "ate"/"eat" etc. are also used as references for superlative performances by historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) dance teams (auxiliaries to HBCU university's marching bands),  and superlative performances in other settings.

The comments that are found below are given in no particular order and are numbered for referencing purposes only.

For the record, I haven't found any online examples for this meaning of "ate" (other than the 2008 and the 2019 examples that are given on urbandictionary.com that are dated before 2020. If you know of any other online examples before 2020, please share those links.

AN EXAMPLE OF THE AAVE MEANING OF "ATE" BEING USED IN MAINSTREAM AMERICAN ENGLISH
From https://news.yahoo.com/american-woman-tone-deaf-video-223919156.html  "American woman’s ‘tone deaf’ video about returning her Filipino nanny back home after 30 years raises questions about treatment of overseas Filipino workers" by Neia Balao, May 22, 2023
"A woman is getting backlash from creators of color after posting what’s been described as a “tone deaf” video about her childhood nanny.

On May 11, Lexie Jayy (@lexie_jayy), a 29-year-old model and content creator based in Los Angeles, California, posted a controversial video on TikTok, in which she reveals that she’s “moving” her childhood nanny back to the Philippines.

[…]

On May 21, in light of the criticism she’s received, Lexie posted a follow up video on TikTok with the caption, “talking about Elena,” during which she acknowledges her “inappropriate” tone and claims to have filmed “a lengthy video going into the details of her immigration process” and “employment.” Elena, however, allegedly requested Lexie keep this information to herself.

TikTok users are accusing Lexie of having an impressive public relations representative.

“let’s go PR-approved pre-written script,” @readwithcindy commented."...

Stomp & Shake Cheers And The Cheerleading Squads That Composed Them

This pancocojams post presents a few cheers that have been attributed to a specific stomp & shake cheerleading squad.

This post doesn't include the words to these stomp & shake cheers. Click https://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2017/06/examples-of-stomp-shake-cheerleading.html for Part I of a three part pancocojams series entitled "

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
Most traditional (go team go) cheers have no known composer. They are called "universal cheers" only because it's likely that no attempt was made to document their composers. But that doesn't have to be the fate of stomp & shake cheers. We can do the work that is needed to document which cheerleading squad was the first to perform a specific stomp & shake cheer.

Just as it is routine for collectors of songs and rhymes to attempt to gather as much demographic information as possible (such as who, where & when), it should be routine for people interested in stomp & shake cheers to document which stomp & shake cheerleader squad (and/or the member/s of that squad) composed specific cheers, when that was, and if the words for that cheer were modified by that squad, when that occurred.

These attributions include online links for sources, or other citations. In some cases, the term "YouTube videos" are used when I (and/or others) believe that those videos attribute that particular cheerleading squad as the original composer of that cheer.

Unfortunately, this project is complicated as there is disagreement among some stomp & shake cheerleading squads about which squad performed specific cheers first, and/or whether a particular cheer that is associated with one stomp & shake cheerleading squad is based on a cheer that is attributed to another stomp & shake squad. This list might include such entries, along with the notes that indicates this disagreement.

Additions and corrections are very welcome.

The coach that had coached WSSU for 17 years Deborah Rivers had relocated due to her job. DeMonte Cox the creator of the chant “Rock” became our coach and the legacy lived on and I was so happy! DeMonte was an excellent coach. He was so creative. He helped us make up dances, and cheers and chants. He brought stunting ideas and kept us at the top of the cheer tier. Most importantly DeMonte did not show favoritism and didn’t get involved with a lot of the petty arguments"...

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
I wrote this editorial note and first published it in the 2016 pancocojams post entitled The Origins Of High Step Style Marching (Historically Black Colleges & Universities Marching Bands) http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2016/09/the-origins-of-historically-black.html

"High step" marching is part of the continuum of African American percussive movement arts. That continuum also includes (religious) shouts, numerous social dances, including tap dancing, many African American children's ring (circle) games & line games, military cadence marching, and distinctive "holy dancing" (also known as "feeling the spirit", "getting happy", "praise dancing").

It's my position that African American originated high step marching greatly influenced these later African American originated percussive movement arts: Black Greek lettered fraternity & sorority stepping, stomp and shake cheerleading, foot stomping cheers, and majorette dance lines (j-setting).

I believe that it's significant that stomp and shake cheerleading, foot stomping cheers, and majorette dance lines (j-setting) all began in the late 1960s/early to mid 1970s. As documented in Elizabeth C. Fine's book Soulstepping : African American Step Shows, what is now known as stepping may have began as early as 1925 at Howard University. [p.45] However, the referent "stepping" for that BGLO (Black Greek lettered organizations) movement art began to be used in the 1960s and 1970s, and stepping appears to have taken on many of its current forms and grew in popularity among BGLOs in those decades."

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE "UPSTOMP" AND THE "JIGGLE POP" (STOMP & SHAKE CHEERLEADING MOTIONS)

Additions and corrections are VERY welcome.

UPSTOMP

"Upstomp" is a stomp and shake movement that is performed by both female and male cheerleaders.

Here's my transcription of an October 27, 2020 UFIT UNIVERSERTY video on Facebook about upstomps
 https://www.facebook.com/UFITCHEERANDDANCEINC/videos/what-is-an-upstomp/2480945182208611/
"An upstomp is when you drive your right foot in the ground and you lift your left leg up in a 90 degree angle. You want to make sure that you're pointing your toes. That's very imperative when you upstomp 'cause if you don't it's not gonna look good. So you wanna make sure that you drive your right leg into the ground and then you're snapping your left leg up to a 90 degree angle with your toe pointed. You wanna see what it looks like? We'll show you.right now"....

****
Former Winston Salem State University cheerleader CeerPhi93* wrote this description of "upstomp" in 2022 inthe discussion thread for the YouTube video entitled
Southern University "Code Blue" Stomp & Shake Cheer Team | 2020, Marvin Price, March 7, 2020  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu5VNhE493U
"… With the upstomp, leg placement (the leg coming up) should be close to a 90 degree as possible with the upstomp foot POINTING downwards and beside the opposite knee as if you are in a (lib)"....
-snip-
I don't understand what "in a (lib)" means in that comment
-snip-
*In additional comments in that Southern University "Code Blue" discussion thread and in other YouTube discussion threads about stomp & shake cheerleading, CheerPhi93 identified himself as a former member of Winston Salem State University's (WSSU) cheerleading squad. That squad used be known as "Cheer Phi", but is now known as "Powerhouse".

JIGGLE POP
Here's a link to an example of "upstomp" and a description of "jiggle pop" ("jigga pop" that I received via email in between 2011-2012 from a former WSSU stomp & shake cheerleader whose internet screen names are/were "upstompjunkie" and "charlottefashions".. ("Jigga pop" is usually given as "jiggle pop" in the very few online pages that I've come across which mention that stomp & shake motion".) I "met" upstompjunkie"/charlottefashion (he used both screen names) as a result of his participation in the discussion thread of i wrote for the sociological blog https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2011/07/21/race-and-the-changing-shape-of-cheerleading/ Race and the Changing Shape of Cheerleading, Guest Blogger Azizi Powell on July 21, 2011 [Unfortunately, A number of the comments in that post's discussion thread, including the comments from upstompjunkie, are no included with that post.]

email from upstompjunkie to Azizi Powel, 2011/2012
"Upstomp

http://youtu.be/IW1qQ-zCVKI

"Jigga-pop" or some call a "double shake" is a little hard to put into words. It's where you throw your hip over so hard it "whips back". It's very difficult to catch on to if not taught properly. Matter of fact in the "olympic high cheerleaders" video. The part they say ,"you can't catch these moves", they are Jigga popping/double shaking. http://youtu.be/zSjZrMqrtDQ

They know its a complicated move for other teams to steal. The name "jigga pop" has nothing to do with Jay-Z. I think its more to do with the jiggle type shake it is."
-snip-
The YouTube videos whose links are given in that comment are included in the video section below.
-snip-
The term "jiggle pop" is a combination of the movement words "jiggle" and "pop". https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/jiggle gives this definition for "jiggle"- "to move from side to side or up and down with quick short movements, or to make something do this".

One definition for the noun "pop" given athttps://www.dictionary.com/browse/popping is "a short, quick, explosive sound.". A combination of these two definition give a description of the stomp and shake "jiggle pop" movement.

Jiggle pops' fast hip swinging movements are best shown off when the cheerleaders wear pleated cheerleader skirts.

In stomp and shake cheerleading, jiggle pops usually are only be performed by the female cheerleaders (which means most of the members of the squad). When males are also members of those squads, they usually don't shake their hips as much as the females. While the female cheerleaders jiggle pop, the male cheerleaders do a much more restrained shake* movement. However, that might be changing. Notice, at around 2:02 to 2:11 in the video given as #5 below, the male cheerleader also jiggle pops.

* A brief statement about the shake movement is given in the "Downstomp" And "Shake" section of this post.

A QUOTE ABOUT STOMP AND SHAKE CHEERLEADING FROM A 2014 VERSION OF THE CENTRAL INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (CIAA)

Here's information about the CIAA that I retrieved on May 26, 2022
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Intercollegiate_Athletic_Association

"The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is a collegiate athletic conference, mostly consisting of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). CIAA institutions affiliate at the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[1]

The twelve member institutions reside primarily along the central portion of the East Coast of the United States, in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Since a majority of the members are in North Carolina, the CIAA moved its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina from Hampton, Virginia in August 2015.[2]
 -snip-
A list of the universities that are members of the CIAA is given on that Wikipedia page.
-snip-
Here's a quote from a 2014 version of a CIAA page that refers to "upstomps", "jiggle pops", and some other stomp and shake movements:

"The CIAA cheering squads practice Stomp 'N Shake that incorporates voice, gymnastics, and dance. Over the past few decades, S-N-S has evolved into a more technical style, priding itself on precision, accuracy, and creativity. Included in this style are the techniques of up-stomp, up-step, down-stomp, kick, side-kick, roll, roll-break, power-arms, slpaz-hand, clasp, blade, and the shakes (car-wash shake, single shake, double shake, hit-shake, and jiggle-pop). CIAA Cheerleading is most known for its cheer battles. This is where squads battle each other during games verbally with chants. It provides a heightened level of excitement and competition to the sports they are cheering for. It showcases cheerleading in a different dimension. Only in this style can you excite the crowd, rally them to cheer on the team, cheer on the team and slay your opponent all at the same time."
-snip-
I retrieved this on February 5, 2014. However, this paragraph isn’t included in that CIAA page as of 9/14/2016. Update: Nov 23, 2020- CIAA has a new format of multiple articles. I haven't found any information about cheerleading on these CIAA pages.https://theciaa.com/

I've read references to "upstomp" in a few comments in discussion threads of some YouTube videos of stomp and shake cheerleading. However, I can't recall reading any references to these other stomp and shake techniques, except for a listing of  the names "downstomp", "upstomp", "jiggle pop" and "shake" that I read on the echsbasketballcheer.com cheer page. That page is now for members only, and I no longer have access to it.  I noted at the time that I viewed that page (in 2015?) that there were no textual descriptions of those four stomp & shake movements.

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE "DOWNSTOMP" AND "SHAKE" MOTIONS IN STOMP & SHAKE CHEERLEADING

[Pancocojams Editor's Note:]
I believe that these descriptions came from emails from upstompjunkie to me. "Upstompjunkie" .who also use/d the screen name "Charlotte's fashion"), was a male former Winston Salem State University stomp &shake cheerleader who I referred to earlier in this pancocojams post. Unfortunately, I no longer have the emails that I received from him to confirm that he was the source of those descriptions.

The "downstomp" movement is the same as the "upstomp" (description given earlier in this post) except that the cheerleader doesn't raise her (or his) knee high when doing that stomping movement.

The "shake" movement is one in which the cfemale and male cheerleaders shake their hips from right to left to the beat. This movement differs from jiggle pop in that these aren't fast, repetitive shakes.
-snip-
I don't have any information about the other stomp & shake motions that are listed in the previously mentioned 2014 CIAA page. I haven't come across any other online information about stomp & shake motions.

If you know any information about any of the stomp & shake cheerleading motions that have been mentioned in this post or any other stomp & shake cheerleading motions, for the cultural and historical record, please share that information in the comment section below. Thanks!

And what do you think cheerleading here? A pep squad is a student body thing has nothing to do with cheer and the purpose of cheerleaders is to pep up the fans during a game... what exactly are they teaching y'all in the Deep South got me puzzled 🤨"

Correcting The Mistaken Belief That Stomp & Shake Cheerleading Is Performed At Every Historically Black University (Part II: comments about stomp & shake cheerleading at Southern University)

Marvin Price, March 7, 2020

Introducing the NEWEST Organization on the campus of SUBR
-snip-
In 2020, Southern University- which is  located in Baton Rouge, New Orleans- became the first member of the SWACcollegiate athletic conference to have a stomp & shake cheerleading team. Members of SWAC are historical Black colleges & universities (HBCUs) that are located in what Americans call "the deep South". In contrast, HBCUs cheerleading teams that have performed stomp & shake cheerleading for decades are mostly located in the Southern states that border the Northeast region of  the United States. Those HBCUs are members of the CIAA collegiate athletic conference.

"That is literally everyone’s favorite cheer on campus. It’s the cheer that got us recognized by the student body and faculty and staff. We just HAD to do it for Jaguar Preview Day. It was requested 😂"

"That H-Y-P-E cheer looks a lot, almost move for move and word for word like Lincoln University FeFe's. Love that y'all are bringing stomp n shake elsewhere, but SNS is not about taking cheers move for move and word for word. It's about being original :) Thanks for bringing the CIAA's style outside of the CIAA!"
-snip-
"Lincoln University" here refers to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Lincoln University is one of two HBCUs in Pennsylvania (Cheney University is the other HBCU in that state. I don't believe that Cheney has a stomp & shake cheerleading team.) I also don't believe that stomp & shake cheerleading is "a thing" in Pennsylvania, except to a very limited extent in high schools who peform modified (not a lot of stomping and shaking) foms of some popular stomp & shake cheer compositions. Perhaps because both of these universities are quite small, and , particularly Lincoln University, isn't close to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or any other urban community that has a largish population of African Americans.

"Okay now they giving me a little WSSU Powerhouse cheerleaders. This is awesome that CIAA stomp n shake style is reaching out to other conferences. I wonder how SU cheerleaders feel about this. I believe that they can eventually come together incorporate both traditional & stomp n shake."
-snip-
WSSU = Winston Salem State University (located in Winston Salem, North Carolina)  was one of the first universities to perform stomp & shake cheerleading. That cheerleading teams' performance styles and many of its cheer  compositions have had (and continues to have) a tremendous influence on stomp & shake cheerleading.

"It originated in all HBCU’s period. I can tell your young. SU’s cheerleaders just changed to the varsity style in the late 90’s all before it was the STOMP AND SHAKE STYLE was used which was very common among BLACK cheerleading squads. Do your research!"

" @sexiyella00  Nah, fam. This "style" of cheering originated in the CIAA, namely among Virginia State and WSSU in the late 80s. You can search through old SU clips on YouTube and you'll see their cheerleaders never had this style even in the 80s. The choreography is all CIAA.

It was a version but it wasn’t strictly that. They did pyramids and everything at one time. This is when Winston was forcing blue in the uniforms along with the red and white..."

"sexiyella00 I mean how someone gonna point me to a video that says 93 that was put up in the last 6-7 years when they were know as Cheer Phi!  Not to mention I have seen it on YouTube several times and my aunt has the VHS! I can name most of the people in there because I was in awe of them! And it has the pyramids just like I said and the uniforms with the blue in it! 😂😂😂 It would be different if YouTube was around in 93 and it said cheer phi . These comments are too much. Don’t know why folks can’t be happy Stomp and Shake has a new team."

"Cheer Phi" is a name that was used for WSSU's cheerleading team. CheerPHi93's comments indicates that he was a member of that cheerleading team.

Jerome Brooks....correction.....The entire conference WASN"T strictly stomp and shake.  Many squads mixed in the traditional styles such as:  WSSU, Norfolk State, Hampton (these are the squads that I do remember doing pyramids/stunts."

"Congrats on the new team Code Blue.  As a new team, yawl are doing better than most squads in the CIAA (from the small clips I currently see).  A few critiques.  When you are doing a slow chant (like hype) the "Founder" or Captain should make sure his Low V doesn't look like a "T" b/c that is how it looked.  #2. With the upstomp, leg placement (the leg coming up) should be close to a 90 degree as possible with the upstomp foot POINTING downwards and beside the opposite knee as if you are in a (lib)....Many of your upstomps have "flexed" foot.  Code Blue, you are not in competition with any other squad in your conference (at this point) so be yourself.  Less is best.  Please, please do you and find ways to come into your own.  I am thankful that you all asked another squad for a chant here and there; THAT WAS THE MOST RESPECTFUL GESTURE.  However, be careful, b/c one similarity of this or that, folk will start comparing you all to other squads.  For example, when you all do your "C" sign up in the air...or the ad lib (blllllrrrrrryip)...folk will say you done copped WSSU....So be mindful of those things and build upon your own creativity.....Peace, Love, and Happiness.  Cheer-Phi (Papa-Ra '93)."

“stomp shack” is a typo for stomp and shake”
"Dance" here probably refers to (majorette) dance lines, auxiliary to the university's marching band.
