PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
There are lots of comments in the discussion thread for the official YouTube music video "Getting Late" which compare South African singer Tyla with (White American) Pop singer Ariana Grande. This post documents a selection of those comments.

Some commenters wrote that Tyla is the "Coloured Ariana Grande". The word "Colored" means something different in South Africa than it does in the United States. Here's information about the South African meaning of the word "Coloured":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coloureds
"Coloureds (Afrikaans: Kleurlinge or Bruinmense, lit. "Brown people") are a multiracial ethnic group native to Southern Africa who have ancestry from more than one of the various populations inhabiting the region, including Khoisan, Bantu, European, Austronesian, East Asian or South Asian. Because of the combination of ethnicities, different families and individuals within a family may have a variety of different physical features.[7][8] Coloured was a legally defined racial classification during apartheid.[8][9]

In the Western Cape, a distinctive Cape Coloured and affiliated Cape Malay culture developed. In other parts of Southern Africa, people classified as Coloured were usually the descendants of individuals from two distinct ethnicities. Genetic studies suggest the group has the highest levels of mixed ancestry in the world."...

It is electronic in nature with aspects of House and Kwaito (also native and unique to South Africa). The talented duo MFR Souls are credited with both creating and christening the sound. It features strong basslines, piano/keyboard usage (hence Amapiano) particularly in the higher notes, varying beat combinations presumably birthed from sample machines/synthesizers creating a genre that can be likened to mathematical equation equaling one thing; dancing"...

EXCERPT FROM AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE SONG "GETTING LATE" BY TYLA FEATURING KOOLDRINK
From https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/wx8939/south-africa-popstar-tyla-getting-late-interview By Frankie Dunn, 04 March 2021
"Tyla is on a mission to become South Africa’s biggest popstar

By putting a pop spin on the deep house sounds of amapiano, 19-year-old Tyla is taking the genre international with her debut single ‘Getting Late’.

[…]

It was just a few years ago that Tyla began posting videos of herself performing both covers and original songs on Instagram. After sending them to “literally everyone in the industry” but never making it out of their message requests, she eventually received an email from her now-manager who she was convinced was trying to scam her, so promptly ignored. Luckily, he persisted, things worked out and Tyla was soon having regular recording sessions with her go-to collaborator Kooldrink, who would go on to produce her impossibly catchy breakout single, “Getting Late”.

While the song (her debut) came out pre-pandemic, the epic accompanying video dropped just a month ago and is already approaching a million views on YouTube. And for good reason. “Getting Late” isn’t quite like anything you’ll have heard before. “I describe it as fusion music,” Tyla explains. “I grew up with a love for all types of sounds and never wanted to be tied down to one. On ‘Getting Late’, Kooldrink and I unintentionally found a balance between my vocal style, which is more pop/R&B, and the sounds of the South African genre amapiano.” By taking elements of the latter — a blend of deep house, jazz and kwaito centred around piano melodies and hard, isolated basslines — and putting a pop spin on it, the duo have created a beautiful musical monster. “We’ve seen people calling it ‘popiano’!”

Tyla adds.

In the cinematic music video for “Getting Late” (“It’s a modern African fairytale”) we join Tyla and her girl gang up in her palace, getting ready for a marching band-led cheerleading performance like no other. Kooldrink plays the love interest in this classic high school movie, stealing Tyla an iced-out Rolex and falling for her hard. Naturally, everybody ends up dancing around the stadium. “South Africans LOVE to party and dance, so it’s a huge part of our culture,” Tyla says of the song’s amapiano beat, “just like the dance moves that come with it, such as the pouncing cat.” Of course, these are moves which you’ll find tutorials for on Tyla’s TikTok, where she currently has over 700k followers eating up her every post.

With people already calling her “South Africa’s Ariana Grande”, Tyla seems to be well on her way to reaching her ambitious end goal to be “the biggest popstar to come out of South Africa… and just in general. I wanna work every day towards breaking that door down for future African artists who have the same dream,” she adds. “I want to become the new reference and the start of something new.” ”…

This pancocojams post of this pancocojams series showcases Kamo Mphela's March 2021 video entitled "Nkunlunkulu" and docments all the comments that I read in the discussion thread of that official video which compare Kamo Mphela with Beyonce, Chris Brown, and/or certain other American singers/dancers.

This pancocojams post also includes all of the reaction vlog comments that I read which compare Kamo Mphele or her dancers to American dancers/singers.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTES
Most of the commenters who compared Kamo Mphele to a non-South African singer/dancer compared her to African American Pop singer Beyonce. That Beyonce was named so often in this discussion thread reflects international opinion that she is at the pinnacle of success in the Pop music business along with Drake and a few other singers.

All of the performers that Kamo Mphela is compared to in the discussion thread for this official video (as well as the comment from the reaction video) are African Americans, except for one commenter who mentioned (White American singer) Lady Gaga and one commenter who mentioned that a number of South Africans believe that South African singer Tyla looks like and has the same performance style as (White American singer Ariana Grande.  [Read multiple comments in the discussion thread for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6Tct3AAre0  Tyla - Getting Late (Official Video) ft. Kooldrink, Tyla, January 28, 2021

Here's how I categorize these "comparison" comments that I quoted:

1. Comments that indicate that Kamo Mphele is now or will soon be on the same celebrity level  as Beyonce (or another celebrity who is named).

2.
Comments that indicate that Kamo Mphele is on a higher celebrity level)as Beyonce (or another celebrity who is named).

3. Comments that indicate that Kamo Mphele's performances has the same vibe (i.e. remind them) of Beyonce or another American singer/dancer who the commenter names. (I believe these comments refer to Kamo Mphele's performance of dance routines along with other people to the accompaniment of her singing. While most of the people she is compared with are known for their dancing as well as their singing, I don't believe that the commenters were saying that Kamo Mphele's style of dancing or style of singing is the same as or similar to the American celebrity who they compared her to.

In addition to these three categories, some other "comparison" comments about Kamo Mphele indicate that that South African dancer/singer looks like (physical resembles) Missy Elliot.

As suggested by those comments about Tyla, these "comparison" comments in these discussion threads aren't the only time that I have read those types of comments in YouTube discussion threads for contemporary African music. Invariable, a particular African singer is compared to Beyonce and a particular African dancer is compared to Chris Brown.

The comments that indicate that a particular African celebrity physically resembles a particular African American celebrity are that commenter's opinion. (I happen to agree that Kamo Mphele resembles Missy Elliot and Tyla resembles (and has a similar singing style as) Ariana Grande.

I believe that the other categories of comments and the push back that the often receive from other commenters in those discussions reflect one or both of the following:

1. Pride the African bloggers have for their cultures and their celebrities.
2. Competition with African American (and other American) popular music and dance celebrities who [it appears to me] to be internationally considered as being the top or in the top level of performers in those fields.

It appears to me that African bloggers on YouTube have widely adopted some cultural aspects of African Americans, particularly many words and phrases from African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Words and phrase expressing that something or someone is very good such as "fire", "killing it", "slaps hard", "sick", "the bomb", "G.O.A.T" and African American phrases such as "[name of a nation] is in the building" or "is in the house", and "Where my [name of nation] people at" are used to show how "up to date", "cool" or "hip" the blogger is.

Furthermore, Africans'  wide use of African American vernacular English in those discussion threads may be considered as conflicting with such comments praising Africa in general or a particular African nation such as this comment from the discussion thread for the official video for Kamo Mphele- "Unkunlukulu":

Empress, April 2021
"We are winning as Africans. The way we found a way to embrace our vernaculars and culture in our music and art is making us dominate the world because theres nothing like originality 👌"

Africans' wide use of African American vernacular in YouTube discussion threads for contemporary African music may be seen as conflicting with comments from a number of Africans posting on those same discussion threads which are highly critical of African American Hip Hop videos as having too many near naked women, and featuring songs which are misogynistic and without meaningful lyrics.

Please share your opinions about this subject in the comment section below. Thanks in advance.

These comments are presented with a link to their internet source and are numbered for referencing purposes only. I'm presenting the comments from the two African American based reaction vlogs first because -in this example and in other examples- those discussion threads tend to include culturally explanatory comments from Africans (who live in are or are from the nation that is the source of that showcased music as well as other Africans) than the discussion threads of  the African videos that I've showcased on this pancocojams blog.

Kamogelo Mphela (born 29 November 1999), is a South African dancer and singer. She became an internet celebrityafter she posted a video of her dancing on her social media account. Her passion for dancing started at an early age, when she accompanied her father who worked at YFM and at events where she would perform on stage and dance which eventually led to her getting more exposure through live performances. She later became popular by posting videos on Instagramwhere she displayed her dancing skills. Before pursuing her dancing career, she had tried acting, and was an extra on the TV show Isibaya. She later realized she did not enjoy acting, and started performing as a gig dancer. Her dancing skills eventually got her the name "Queen of Amapiano"

In 2019, she got signed to Major League Music and released her Ep titled, Twentee under the label.. She has also released songs such as "Suka Emabozen" and "Menemene" and has collaborated with South African singer Busiswa on the single "Sbwl] and has featured on the MFR Soulz single "Amanikiniki" ranked No. 1 on Good Hope FM's SA House Music Top 10 Chart.] She has also performed and worked with local musicians such as Nadia Nakai and Killer Kau. "4:20 This looks like part of the Canal Walk mall parking lot in Cape Town. I've seen a lot of people using that section for videos because it's a big parking lot and this part is the far edge so it's never full. It also has good views."

I didn't wanna complement and critique at the same time, but the lyrics are not it for me. I feel like she can do better, as she grows continously as an artist. But I'm glad we're getting the pop girls visuals.
