Examples Of Funny, Tongue-In-Cheek "We Approve" Comments From Various YouTube Discussion Threads Of Southern African Contemporary Music

Edited by Azizi Powell

This pancocojams post continues my documentation of examples of the custom of commenters writing "the name of their nation, or city, or university etc. + the word "approves" in YouTube discussion threads of Southern African contemporary music videos.

Part III presents a small number of funny, tongue in cheek "we approve" comments from various discussion threads of Southern African contemporary YouTube music videos.

for Part I of this pancocojams series. That post presents an overview of these types of YouTube comments as well as examples of these comment that mention names of nations and names of cities + the word "approve" .

presents a small number of examples of these formulaic "we approve" comments  that mention universities. Examples of other types of these "we approve" comments are also included in this post.

PANCOCOJAMS EDITOR'S NOTE
In addition to "reppin" ("representing") their nation, city, university, and other affiliations, "we approve" comments document that the commenters' really admire the particular song that is the focus of that discussion thread. As such. commenters are given that song a virtual "seal of approval".

In addition, these "we approve" comments may indicate that the commenters believe that that song is worthy of winning "the song of the year" music contests in South Africa and/or other music contests for African music or any genre of music that are held in the United States and elsewhere.

On a deeper level, these "we approve" comments also document the familiarity that Africans have for the cultures (including the popular music and dances) of other African nations. That cultural familiarity crosses national and regional boundaries and is often also found among African emigrants throughout the world. Furthermore, these "we approve" comments also document the fact that certain examples of contemporary African music are known and loved by a number of people throughout the world who aren't African.

Although this series focuses on secular (non-religious) music, I've come across a small number of  "we approve" comments in some YouTube discussion threads of contemporary southern African religious music

With regard to tongue in cheek examples of "we approve" comments: It appears to me, that, with the exception of "I approve" comments, all of these comments that I short handily refer to as "we approve" could be considered "tongue in cheek", since commenters are clearly exaggerating since claim that they represent everyone in their nation, city, university, etc. That is clearly not true. However, "we approve" comments may be one way of expressing that the commenters and a lot of people around them love that particular song-and if they don't love it, they should.

Here's a definition of the English phrase: "tongue in cheek from https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/tongue-in-cheek

"If you say something tongue in cheek, you intend it to be understood as a joke, although you might appear to be serious:

He said that he was a huge fan of the president, although I suspect it was tongue in cheek."
-end of quote-

People writing these types of "we approve" comments are having fun by making fun of those types of YouTube discussion thread comments. And they are doing so during these difficult Covid-19 quarantine times without putting other people down. More power to them!

  1. Here's another type of funny comment from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWSBhp4FQH0&ab_channel=PrinceKaybee

    Maxwell Chikwira, 2018
"i have graduated from being a fan of Prince kaybee to being an Air Conditioner.. Zimbabwe approves uti huuuuuuu"

This type of gimmicky comment was rather widely used in African discussion threads for contemporary music and maybe mostly in Southern African discussion threads.

It appears to me that the custom of writing this type of comment has lessened along with the number of people writing "we approve" comments.
