Floor Rolls (Floor Ripples) In Videos Of A 1987 / 1988 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Step Show, The 1988 Movie School Daze, & A 2010 VSU Woo Woo Stomp & Shake Performance

Alpha Step Show - Morehouse Campus... Late 80's

earl Hilliard Jr, Jul 7, 2016

This is an Alpha Rho Chapter Step Show from Morehouse's Campus I shot, from either 1987 or 1988.  This was a few years before I myself crossed the Burning Sands of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  Please excuse the quality of the video, this was shot decades ago on the old VHS(c) medium, by a then novice videographer!

"Floor rolls" ("floor ripples") are performed from 2:31 to around 3:09 in this video.

So many real fraternities aren't this creative. This is my favorite scene of the whole movie.

“They actually got this from real BGLO fraternities.."

"Gamma Phi Gamma" ("GPhiG") is a fictitious Black Greek Letter Organization that was created for this movie.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority - 1987 Step Show At Howard University, (Part I & Part II videos & comments)".

In the context of that video, a "ripple" is a movement that is started at one end of a (usually vertical) line and is then performed rapidly by each person in the line.

The ripples in that video begins around 5:39 and continues to around 5:59.

PLEASE HELP DOCUMENT THIS CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
I'm interested in learning about this acrobatic move that I refer to as "floor rolls” or “floor ripples". For instance, what is the actual name/s for this move? Is the late 1980s the earliest documented use of this move by historically Black Greek letter fraternities? Which fraternities do this move? Do any historically Black Greek letter sororities do this move?

Please share information and links to YouTube videos in the comment section below. Thanks!

  1. Notice that the late 1980s Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity step show that is showcased in this pancocojams post takes place outdoors in the middle of a circle that is created by onlookers.

The other two performances take place indoors in a gymnasium.

I believe that most historically Black Greek letter organization step shows nowadays occur indoors on an auditorium stage while those organizations' strolls usually occur outdoor.

I'm not sure whether audiences for these events usually encircle the performers like they did in that late 1980s video, or whether audiences face the performers standing in rows as is standard in mainstream American shows.
