Sizalelwe Indodana - A South African Christmas Song (with lyrics and links to additional examples)

Concord Nkabinde Music, Dec. 19, 2019

This time of the year always reminds me of my childhood & my years of growing up in Dube, Soweto. The one song that became a soundtrack for the Christmas season at that time was this simple Traditional song that really takes me back there. This is my interpretation of it. Sizalelwe Indodana Igama layo nguJesu Iyo yodwa, Iyo yodwa, Iyo yodwa Umsindisi. Unto us a Son/Saviour is born. Have a Blessed & a meaningful Christmas season. **** Edited by Azizi Powell This pancocojams post showcases the South African (Xhosa?) song "Sizalewe Indodana". The lyrics to this song are given in this post along with the Google translation results. This post also includes links to several other YouTube versions of this song. **** LYRICS WITH GOOGLE TRANSLATE RESULTS

Sizalelwe Indodana Igama layo nguJesu Iyo yodwa, Iyo yodwa, Iyo yodwa Umsindisi. -snip- These words are repeated, forming the entire song. The Google translate feature for these words gave these results for Zulu and for Xhosa: "A Son Has Been Born to Us
His name is Jesus
Alone, Alone, Alone Savior.
-snip-
Instead of the word "alone", a better English translation might be "our only" or "the only".

This highly dramatic traditional South African song is a true musical gem, presented a cappella at a slower tempo. Arranged by two South African composers who are experts in this genre, the arrangement is a well-crafted representation of the isiXhosa song. The upper voices carry the melody and the lower voices provide the harmonic underlay in the SATB and TTBB versions, while the SSAA version uses a small ensemble to present the melody with the remainder of the choir providing the harmony. Translation and pronunciation notes are provided."
