This pancocojams post presents examples of the signature Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chant "This Is A Serious Matter".
The content of this post is presented for cultural, folkloric, and aesthetic purposes.
I consider fraternity & sorority chants to be cultural artifacts which deserve to be collected, preserved, and studied. I also believe that fraternity & sorority songs and chants should only be recited and/or performed by those persons who are affiliated with the specific organization that is associated with that particular chant.
All copyrights remain with their owners.
Thanks to composers of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.* for the chant "This Is A Serious Matter". Thanks also to those who shared examples of this chant with me, and all those who are featured in these YouTube videos. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post and thanks to the publishers of these videos on YouTube.

For the historical record, Senator Kamala Harris, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a Democratic candidate for the President of the United States, said "This is a serious matter" in response to a question that she was asked at the 4th Democratic primary debate (October 15, 2019).
Senator Harris may have used this AKA saying before in her campaign and at other times, but I remembered to document her saying it at that event.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CHANT
Words
"This Is A Serious Matter" appears to be one of the most widely known traditional Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. (AKA) step chant. Step chants are unison chants that are vocalized by a Greek letter organization without any recorded music or live musical instrumentation.
There are multiple versions of this chant, but each of those versions include the words "This is a serious matter".
How This Chant Is Performed
[Please help describe how "This Is A Serious Matter" is performed. Thanks!]
Although the words to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chant "This Is A Serious Matter" may differ, all of the step routines that I've seen online and off-line have many closely similar body movements. "This Is A Serious Matter" is particularly known for the steppers performing a distinctive side to side unison movement throughout most of the recitation. To my knowledge, that side to side movement is unique to the "This Is A Serious Matter" chant. It isn't performed for any other AKA chant and isn't performed in any step routine of any other historically Black Greek letter organization.
Steppers hold their both of their arms bent at the elbow with the palms of each hand stiffly held facing down. In the context of Black Greek letter organizations, this stance is only performed by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority during certain other AKA step show routines, ad well as an "attention" position before and after their step show routines. This "attention stance" or a modified form of that stance that replicates the "walk like an Egyptian stance and movement"* is also a signature part of some Alpha Kappa Alpha strolls (party walks)

*Click https://www.quora.com/What-does-it-mean-to-walk-like-an-Egyptian-and-how-did-the-term-originate for information about and a drawing of the "walk like an Egyptian" dance,Here's a portion of that excerpt posted by Jonathan R Strong,2020
"The phrase is from the title of a 1986 released by a pop music group called The Bangles. It was originally on an album called Different Light, but when it was released as a single, it quickly sold over a million copies and became the number one Billboard song in 1987.
The phrase is a reference to the way ancient Egyptian paintings sometimes depicted people walking, with one arm held horizontally at the side, arm bent at the elbow facing up, and the other horizontally at the side with arm bent at the elbow and facing down. The video that the Bangles recorded for the song showed all sorts of people mimicking the same move, looking somewhat like this: [inserted replication of an ancient Egyptian drawing]."
At some point in the "This is A Serious Matter" routine, the steppers hold one palm up in front of their face mimicking looking into a hand held mirror to admire their pretty face and their (usually long) hair. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority are called "pretty girls" and the traditional beauty standard in the United States is that pretty women have/had long, flowing hair. For that reason, at some points in the "This Is A Serious Matter" step routine-and in many of other AKA routines, as well as before and after those routines, the steppers flick their hair quickly from side to side to emphasize their beauty.
At the end of many "This Is A Serious Matter" routines that I have watched online and off-line, the steppers stand still while maintaining that "attention" stance, the steppers stand still and tilt their head far back, in a position that I interpret as paying homage to the sun.

WHEN WAS "THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER" COMPOSED?
In May 2014 an anonymous commenter who used the screen name "The Author" wrote in the discussion thread of the d iscussion thread for http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2012/08/alpha-kappa-alpha-sorority-inc-this-is.html (the.2012 pancocojams post about this AKA chant) that "Serious Matter was authored and first performed at Langston University, Langston Oklahoma in 1986 by the Ivy line lovingly named '15 Girls in Search of 20 Pearls'".
Probably that same anonymous commenter also wrote in May 2014 in that same discussion thread that "The chant was performed at the Langston University Homecoming Event...".
Unfortunately, that commenter didn't share the original words to this chant.
Notice that 1986 is the same year that the hit American Pop song "Walk Like An Egyptian" song with its distinctive movements was released. Those side to side arms bent movements were duplicated by AKAs as described above..

LYRICS FOR THIS CHANT
The lyrics to "This is a Serious Matter" can differ slightly in the chants for various Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority chapters and may also differ within the same chapter at different points in time.
"This is a Serious Matter" is usually composed of two line rhyming verses that state the history of the sorority, praise the sorority and its members, and/or diss (insult) other sororities. This chant always includes the line "this is a serious matter".
Many versions of this chant start with the step team saying "1 9 0 8". This is the date that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded. Most versions of "This Is A Serious Matter" include a reference to the fact that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc was the first Black sorority. Each version of this chant includes the refrain "This Is a SERIOUS matter". However, a step team may only repeated the words "This is a serious matter; this is a serious, serious, serious matter".
My sense is that what "is a serious matter" is the sorority itself- its history, its ideals, its present activities, and its members' commitment to that organization.

"The Divine Nine and the National Pan-Hellenic Council
There are nine historically Black Greek letter organizations (BGLOs) that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Collectively, these organizations are referred to as "The Divine Nine." Each of these fraternities and sororities is rich in history - ties to one or more of these organizations may be found in many college-educated Black families in the United States."
