DEFINITIONS OF CERTAIN WORDS AND PHRASES IN THIS SONG

Please correct or add to these definitions/explanations. Thanks!

Numbers are given for referencing purposes only.

1. "Come see my moda" = come see my mother [out of respect and (presumably) to get her permission to court me/be with me]

**
2. "if you want to tarry me" : "tarry" [English language] definition #2 = "to abide or stay in or at a place" https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tarry https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tarry

**
3."If you want, come and carry" - if you want [me], come and take me [to see my mother]; come and go with me [to see my mother]

**
4. "On your marks, come and carry"- "on your marks" - "used as a command to tell runners to get into position for the start of a race. On your mark, get set, go!" https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/on%20your%20mark

The implication is that this man isn't the only competitor in "the race" to win this woman.

**
5. "hurry hurry come carry your baby go" = hurry, hurry, come take your baby [meaning the singer]

Note: "Carry.... go" in this song may have a different connotation than it has in the definitions that are given in these online sites:

http://www.ngex.com/personalities/babawilly/dictionary/pidginc.htm Babawilly's Dictionary of Pidgin English Words and Phrase:
"carry go" = Used playfully to mean -Get away or Get out of here"

[and]

http://www.nairaland.com/835696/nigerian-pidgin-english-meanings/2
"carry go - go ahead/permission granted"

**
6. "Oga LandLord" - "Oga" = "Person in charge" http://www.ngex.com/personalities/babawilly/dictionary/pidginc.htm Babawilly's Dictionary of Pidgin English Words and Phrases.

**
7. "Everyday na so so sisi o (na so so Sisi o)
Everyday na different specie o (of different Sisi o)" = Everyday you [deal with; mes with] so many sisters (women); Everyday there are different species [kinds, types] of sisters (women) [who you are dealing with]

http://www.ngex.com/personalities/babawilly/dictionary/pidginc.htm Babawilly's Dictionary of Pidgin English Words and Phrases
"na" = it is

[and]

"O!": Placed at the end of sentences for emphasis and effect E.g. I go broke bottle for yua head O!

  1. Several commentators in the discussion thread for the YouTube official video for MzVee ft Yemi Alade - "Come and See My Moda"
wrote that this song has the same tune as "Victoire" by Petit Yodé.

    Here's one of those comments:

    Gaetan Petit, 2018
"from 1:03 until 17:17 reminds me of an hit from the ivory coast. The name of the hit was: "victoire" from Petit Yode. French speaking people from Africa will surely remember that. Good song anyway"

I found the implication interesting that French speaking Africans may be familiar with different popular music than non-French speaking Africans.

  2. As an African American, it strikes me that the premise of MzVee ft Yemi Alade's "Come and See My Moda" is somewhat similar to Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" in that the singer is telling the man she is dating that he has to prove he's serious about her.

In the American "Single Ladies" song, the man has to propose to marry her (put an engagement ring/wedding ring on her.]

In the African song the man has to "Come And See My Moda".

  3. For the record - no pun intended- I love the women's natural hairstyles and African fabrics in this "Come And See My Moda" video.

And I love how superstar Yemi Alade collaborates with other African singers, and in doing so introducing them to a larger audience.
