SHOWCASE VIDEO: Black Panther Movie Premiere in Ghana

Native Borne, Published on Feb 17, 2018

Not sure how we forgot to mention Michael B. Jordan in our movie review segment but this brother is the best villain ever!!! He is laser-focused on one goal and intensely direct and uncompromising. Even though Michael's character was creepy, scary and unrelenting; part of him was soft, deeply scarred and even relatable. We absolutely loved him as a villain!!!

We here at the Black Panther Movie Premiere in Wakanda/Ghana! Accra was Lit. We enjoyed the night, loved the film and shared a few thoughts about the film....

"Black To Grace I'm relieved that You said "many" and not "most" which is a very important distinction to be made here. The notion that AA could be more racist than whites eludes me but I'm sure that there is that possibility. The idea of the oppressed becoming the oppressor is well documented in history. Though, I find white racism in the contemporary America, more especially in the Northeast America to be covert. So, the parameter with which one measures is equally as important."

"Native Borne you need to research on Queen Amina of Zazzau, present Day Zaria-kaduna state north of Nigeria. She was a warrior who took over from her father King of Zazzau and instead of ruling like watch over the people. She rather put her sister to oversea the kingdom while she went out to fight and conquer their enemies. And conquered kingdoms. She died when the colonial masters came and she got killed fighting them."

"Ghana, like most African countries, has a rich history and culture that she has availed to the world, however, my opinion is that so many have adopted a Eurocentric mindset and have forgotten who and what they are.

Our greatest strengths is who we are as a people; and not what others have perceived. Culture...the language, music, art, food, religion, and ideas are what keeps a people on even keel. Anyone of the latter removed can have drastic results. So many of us are healing and are in need of TLC (tending loving care)."

"AKAN TRIBESMAN

Apparently you didn’t comprehend my post, so here goes. It’s no secret that with the advent of internet and globalization, some of it’s adverse effects is the loss of culture. Case in point...compared to twenty years ago, more people have moved to the cities and have abandoned the countryside. Most traditional values are practiced more in the country, as opposed to the city.

One would find that more females in the city would adopt more western hairstyles (WEAVES) as opposed to the country. The latter could also be attributed to higher incomes, however, my point is still valid. Besides hairstyles, even dress codes would be different.

Christianity is not an indigenous religion! A man without his religion is like a ship without a rudder. Even language has shifted to where the pseudo-educated tend to emphasize the usage of English, even though it’s the universal language, as a symbol of superiority; or more refined than those who speak their native tongue. I, of course, have embellished a little to make a larger point. The usage of English and French are deemed more renaissance in the eyes of some.

Do you think that ancient drummers are in great numbers compared to say, twenty years ago? Is this cultural identity being transferred to the younger generation as it was in the past?

In closing, there are changes in cultures worldwide, but the arc seems to be bending towards a Eurocentric idealism as opposed to indigenous."

**
REPLY
78. AKAN TRIBESMAN
"you've got great points. i believe that Eurocentric idealism has been with us since colonialism... The founding fathers who got independence for Ghana, including Kwame Nkrumah, were all Oxford or Cambridge graduates...
They are the ones who fought for independence but made sure our laws, including judiciary and government is modeled on the colonizer's format despite the fact that we have out traditional customs and cultures, led by our chiefs and kings..."

"Shout out from New York City... You two are a Beautiful Couple... My take on the Movie is that Wakanda is ran by a bunch of selfish Africans who for centuries cared nothing about the rest of their continent or the African diaspora. The Wakandans only cared about Wakanda. At the very end T'challa (The Black Panther) does some community outreach in Oakland but what Wakanda should really be doing with all that technology is planning the unification and empowerment of Africa and Africans in the diaspora and eventually the COVERT overthrow of White supremacy which is destroying the planet. Killmonger had to be put down because he was too overt, bloodthirsty, hateful and reckless to do the job of the global overthrow of western white supremacy correctly, but Killmonger's motivation IS CORRECT which is the The overthrow of White supremacy"

"Greetings, I'm an African American woman in the USA and I loved the movie! Michael B. Jordan's character represented the lost post-slavery dialogue between the African American and African. His hurt and violence represented our feelings of abandonment and being stripped of our culture. That's why he said he was a product of his environment (i.e. Black poverty, fatherless, oppression and crime in the U.S.) and at the end of the movie where he spoke of being like his ancestors that jumped in the ocean because death was better than being held in bondage (slavery). The family (Africans) left the son (African Americans) behind while they lived in an intact culture and country. His character revealed the questions and feelings that some African Americans have wondered about for centuries. Why didn't anyone come back to rescue us from slavery? Was Killmonger really the villain in the movie? Excellent story line!"

The more I reflect on Michael’s character Killmonger, and after watching the film for a second time, my mind began to unravel the layers and internal struggle he had within. He was superb in this film. What I didn’t like is the fact that he killed hundreds and possibly thousands of innocent people in other countries including those in the motherland to get revenge and to release the virbranium. But on the flip side, I understand why he felt it was so important for our people to receive this precious metal."

A couple of weeks ago l was on the phone with my born and bred 36 year old son and referred to 1970 when James Brown and band came to play in Nigeria. My son gave me a hearty good laughter from Oakland to London where l am living.
Reason why?
The 19 year old bass player(Bootsy Collins) of J B’s band never knew “Africans” can play instruments.
Now the cracker - Bootsy Collins and crew went to see Fela Ransome Kuti and Nigeria/ Africa 70 at the incipient African Shrine and they were blown away. Bootsy believed J B band was the best in the world and decades after couldn’t hide his impression and the savagery inflicted on the minds of Global African People (GAP)

For verification of the above, pair the names of Bootsy Collins and Fela Kuti."
-snip-
I think the phrase "now the cracker" has the same meaning as the American English vernacular term "now this takes the cake" which -in the context of this comment probably means something like "this is the extraordinary point".

"oyinbo peppe Ghanaian food is quite good but it is highly starch which isn’t great on the digestive system. Also the Maggie spice cube is popular here but it includes a lot of synthetic elements. We lessened on eating local foods because we got sick. That’s our personal experience though, a lot of folks don’t have the same experience. Currently we eat at facilities which are more regulated. On a more positive note lol , Ghanaians has some of the best seasoned food we have ever tasted."

"the adage you were looking for is " When all your chickens come home to roost.." enjoyed your review very much, even shared it as there are unfortunately some deeply negative people posting not just very stupidly negative opinions but also very closed minded self serving reviews which i honestly just stop listening even cut off completely... these types of persons regardless of nationality is one of many reasons for the disconnection between our people and others.. with me just seeing the trailers and parts from interviews with GMA, SWAY and others i got an even more intense understanding of Black Panthers fathers beliefs and their humbleness as i have felt that we all should strive to be in all of our lives.. even though i do honestly know that this is a fictional movie i have also long believed that we all would be so much better if we all strived to live in peace, harmony, understanding and acceptance of all the differences we are blessed with as a whole.. But then a lot of people would say to me that i am living in a life of fiction if i feel this way... but those are my feelings as a human being and child of the All Mighty....."

"BARBARA DAVIS-THOMAS Thanks, sis ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ Totally agree. Your words are deep and true๐Ÿ˜Š The negativity some folks spew is as if the movie personally attacks them in some way. For us, certain films have always had deeper meaning and life lessons we can all learn from. Black Panther not only showed us the potential of the black race but also how in an advanced and "all black" society we are still human and imperfect. We loved Black Panther and even though it is a fictional film, there are hidden truths and lessons we can learn from it."
