Old And New American Names Beginning In "Tyr" and "Ty" Besides "Tyrone"

Edited by Azizi Powell

Update: February 4, 2020

This pancocojams post presents lists of names which begin in "Tyr" or "Ty" other than the name "Tyrone" that have been used by Black Americans and Americans who are not Black.

Special focus in this post are names in that category for Black Americans that were collected by [White American] folklorist Newbell Niles Puckett. This post also highlights some names in that category that are found in the 1994 book Proud Heritage: 11,001 Names for your African –American Baby Eliza Dinwiddie-Boyd [Avon Books].

Those lists demonstrate that other names with the "Tyr" or "Ty" beginning element besides "Tyrone" were used by Black Americans and by non-Black Americans. Those list also demonstrate that while the name "Tyrone" is much less popular than it used to be among all people residing in the United States, names with the "Tyr" and "Ty" elements are still relatively popular, particularly among African Americans.

INFORMATION ABOUT NEWBELL NILES PUCKETT
From http://ech.cwru.edu/ech-cgi/article.pl?id=PNN
"PUCKETT, NEWBELL NILES (8 July 1898-21 Feb. 1967), educator, sociologist, and folklorist...

Puckett's life was devoted to traditional folk cultures, from black studies to ethnic traditions, rural and urban. He studied naming practices, superstitions, folk beliefs, wit and humor, and religious beliefs on field trips to the Deep South, throughout Ohio, and into the Canadian wilderness. He was president of the Ohio and Cleveland folklore societies and elected a fellow of the American Folklore Society (1959). Puckett wrote Folk Beliefs of the Southern Negro (1926) and Names of American Negro Slaves (1937), and offered a pioneering course in black studies at WRU. He compiled detailed, extensive collections of data on "Black Names," "Religious Life of the Southern Negro," "Canadian Lumberjack Songs," and "Ohio Superstitions and Popular Beliefs." His papers, tapes, transcripts, and photographs are part of the Newbell Niles Puckett Memorial Gift deposited in the John G. White Collection of CLEVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY..."

Pancocojams' Editor note:
For a person as interested in names given to African Americans as I am, this website on Puckett's collection of American "unusual" names is a fascinating read. I'm particularly interested in the fact that Puckett found numerous non-standard names among White Americans, and and the fact that some of those names were the same or similar to the non-standard names that Black people had selected for themselves.
Unfortunately, no ages are attached to these names. Since Puckett began his collection in 1920, it's likely that some of the names he collected were given to people who were born in the late 19th century.

No information on those pages indicate how those names were pronounced. However, it's likely that some of these names were probably pronounced the same way that they are now: i.e. "Tyree" and "Tyra". Nowadays, "Tyree" is considered to be a "Black male name" and I believe that it is usually pronounced "tie-REE". And nowadays "Tyra" is considered to be a Black female name and is usually pronounced "TIE-rah".

It seems to me that most American English words-including names- have the emphasis placed on the second syllable. But there are a number of exceptions to that rule. For example, I believe that many of the two syllable "newly created" names that are given below from the Proud Heritage name book have the emphasis placed on the second syllable (for instance, in my experience as a substitute elementary school teacher in a school that was 99% African American, the male name "Tyquan" is pronounced "tie-QUAN" and the male name "Tyreece" is pronounced "tie-REECE". By the way, "Tyreece" is a member of the fairly large "ice" (eese) family of names (among African Americans). A female form of that name is "Cherise" (pronounced cher-REESe.)

SELECTED NAMES BEGINNING WITH "TYR" OR "TY" FROM THE BOOK PROUD HERITAGE: 11001 NAMES FOR YOUR AFRICAN AMERICAN BABY by Eliza Dinwiddle-Boyd, 1994
Chapter: African Names: Male
p. 201
Tyehimba – Tiv: We stand as a nation
-snip-
Note: "Tyehimba" is the only traditional African language name beginning in "Ty" that was included in that book. That is also the only name beginning with "Ty" that was included in the 1972 book Names From Africa, Their Origin, Meaning, and Pronunciation (Johnson Publishing Company). In that book the male name "Tyehimba - tah-ee-heem-BAH – we stand as a nation" is found on page 73 and is said to come from the Tiv language of Nigeria.

This suggests that the "Tyr" and "Ty" sound preference* for African Americans didn't originated in Africa.

*pronounced "tie" (rhymes with "hi" and "by")

*Some of these names are clearly variants of other names, for instance "Tyreel", "Tyrelle", "Tyrill", "Tyrrell" are variants of the name "Terrell". Also, for example, "Tyriq" is a variant of the Arabic name "Tarik" and "Tyshawn" and "Tyshon" are variants of the name "Shawn"/"Shon".

In addition, as Newbell Niles Puckett's collections demonstrates "Tyree" isn't a newly invented name. My position is that "Tyree" is a variant form of the Biblical name "Tyre" (the name of the Phoenician/Lebanese city). However, it could (also) be a Scottish male name (a form of the name for the god Tyr).
