Jungle Brothers - "I'll House You" (YouTube User Names & Comments About Old School House Music)

Edited by Azizi Powell

This post provides information about House music and showcases a sound file and a video of the Jungle Brothers' now classic 1988 House music record "I'll House You" (clean version). Information about the Jungle Brothers is also given in this post.

This post also provide selected comments from the discussion thread of that featured sound file. Those selected comments focus on two aspects of bloggers' comments from this video's discussion thread: selected comments about how VEVO heavily censored this song's lyrics, and documentation of selected examples of bloggers' user screen names that are found in that video's discussion thread.

The content of this post is presented for cultural, folkloric, historical, entertainment, and aesthetic purposes.

Thanks to Jungle Brothers for their musical legacy and thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post. Thanks also to the producers of this sound file and this video and the publishers of this video.

EDITOR'S COMMENT
This post continues my interest on examples of user names that are found in the viewer comment threads of YouTube.* I'm particularly interested in documenting types of "made up" user names because I believe that a review of those types of names can be of folkloric & sociological value. That documentation is of particular urgency because, since June 2012, YouTube has tried to convince its commenters and its video uploaders to switch to the use of their "real names" (first and last names).** And it appears that many people have done so, including me.

This post focuses on selected names used by bloggers that posted comments reminiscing about their experiences with old school House music. In this context, "old School" means music from the 1980s and 1990s.

This isn't meant to be a complete listing of the made up user names on this videos' viewer comment threads. However, I believe that these featured user names are representative of the types of user names that are found on that particular comment thread. I also believe that these types of YouTube user names are representative of many of the types of user names that are currently found throughout the internet.

I've added no analysis of these selected names. However, I will note that there a considerable portion of these names end in numbers. I'm not sure why that custom to have been popular and also seems to remain popular among those bloggers who use "made up names" on the internet.

*Click the "YouTube user names" tag below to find other pancocojams posts in this ongoing series.

INFORMATION ABOUT HOUSE MUSIC
From http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=House+Music
"House music, (named "House Music" after The Warehouse club in Chicago where it originated in the early 1980's,) is a style of electronic dance music that was developed by dance club DJs in Chicago that were influenced by early to mid-1970s dance music as spun by DJs in New York, and spread to Detroit, New York, and eventually Europe. House music is strongly influenced by elements of the early to mid 1970s soul- and funk-infused dance music style of disco. House music takes disco's use of a prominent bass drum on every beat and developed a new style by mixing in a heavy electronic synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples, and reverb- or delay-enhanced vocals...

Origins of the term
The term "house music" is said to have originated from a Chicago club called The Warehouse, which existed from 1977 to 1983.[43] Clubbers to The Warehouse were primarily black and gay,[33] who came to dance to music played by the club's resident DJ Frankie Knuckles, whom fans refer to as the "godfather of house"....

Chip E.'s 1985 recording "It's House" may also have helped to define this new form of electronic music.[47] However, Chip E. himself lends credence to the Knuckles association, claiming the name came from methods of labeling records at the Importes Etc. record store, where he worked in the early 1980s: bins of music that DJ Knuckles played at the Warehouse nightclub were labelled in the store "As Heard At The Warehouse", which was shortened to simply "House". Patrons later asked for new music for the bins, which Chip E. implies was a demand the shop tried to meet by stocking newer local club hits.[48]"...

INFORMATION ABOUT THE JUNGLE BROTHERS
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_Brothers
"The Jungle Brothers are an American hip hop group that pioneered the fusion of jazz and hip-hop and also became the first hip-hop group to use a house-music producer. The group began performing in the mid-1980s and released its first album, Straight Out the Jungle, in July 1988.[1] With Afrocentric lyrics and innovative beats, the Jungle Brothers were critically acclaimed and soon joined the influential Native Tongues collective.[2] The original trio comprised Michael Small (Mike Gee), Nathaniel Hall (Afrika Baby Bam, a homage to Afrika Bambaataa) and Sammy Burwell (DJ Sammy B). Sammy B left the group after the group released Raw Deluxe in May 1997.[1]"...

SELECTED VIEWER NAMES AND THEIR COMMENTS (from the sound file that is given above:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFGhQSiGHWM

I've selected these comments as examples of YouTube users' names and for the remembrances, opinions, and/or information about House music that are found in the comments themselves.

These comments and single comments are given in relative chronological order, but they may not be in consecutive order.

I've assigned numbers to these comments, including each comment in exchanges, for referencing purposes. My comments and/or explanations about certain words in a few of these comments are given after the word "snip" (meaning "quote ends").

Also, note that I classified all of the comments posted with the date " 1 year ago" to be in 2014, although some of those comments could have been posted in 2013.

A number of comments on YouTube viewer comment threads contain profanity. However, I've not included any of those comments below except for the mild curse word "damn".

**
5. chinita41
"HOUSE MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONGG!! never forget how many times i jumped up to this one on the dance floor...nyc clubbers stand up!"
-snip-
In this context, "stand up" is short for "Stand up and be counted". Other ways of saying the same thing are "Let people know that you are here"., "Represent!" and "Holla! (Holler!). As shown throughout this compilation of comments from that discussion thread, people from cities besides New York City and nations besides the USA represented where they live/lived when they danced to this song by adding a comment naming that city or that nation.

I can't find helenhirst74's comment. It may have been deleted, but it seems that it was talking about the race of people who like House music.

12. Laurence Nealon
"This may have been a big song especially in New York, but I remember vividly dancing to this in 1988 with my late first wife in London ;D Oh the memories."

13. manyamurani
"this tune was big in zim, bretts nite club with dj tommy dutch in da house"
-snip-
“zim” = colloquial referent for Zimbabwe in Southern Africa

"Tune" = the entire song and not just the song's melody.
People in the Caribbean also use "tune" ("chune", "choon") as a referent for the entire song.

18. articulatedcomics
"I remember this was the joint that got the club turnt! Everybody jumpin up kickin that 1 leg back and sweatin like mad!"
-snip-
In the context of this comment, "joint" means "song"/"record". "Jam" is another African American originated slang term for "song"/"record".

Notice that sweating a lot (gettin funky) is a sign the people were really dancing hard to a particular song.

The African American Vernacular English word "turnt" means "hyped", "pumped up", "crunked", "really energized", "really excited". "Turned up" is another way of saying "turnt".

19. Michael Cangelosi
"I also remember this classix on the Boardwalk at the Jersey Shore in Wildwood."

20. svetaswan
"I'm fascinated by all the posts re: the New York club scene in the late '80s. I didn't discover this jam until my cousin handed me a "Best of House Music" tape in early-1991, in which this song was the 1st track. I guess that's what living in suburban Atlanta will do to you, lol.

That tape started my love affair with house music- guess I was late to the party compared to you clubbing Northeasterners!

I miss the days of house music being this "edgy" thing I would jam to."

**
21. Cromeus

"iz" = is

"Turn it up!!!"
-snip-
While "turn it up" might mean "Make the volume louder", I think that this comment problably means something like "Get energized!; "Pump your spirit up!" (Pump up the spirit/atmosphere in a club). Another colloquial way of saying this is "Get fired up!".

Read my comments in after #16 about the word "turnt".

Notice the lack of capitalization and punctuation in this sentence, and in others in this compilation. This is a feature of internet blogging and texting because communicating fast is much more important than following capitalization and punctuation rules. The assumption is that those rules are understood and the target audience for those comments will understand what the person is writing.

Blige, SWV, Brandy & TLC muah bless and nuff luv to Left Eye Lisa Lopez - But now when it comes to house I was in grade 8 at an all ages huge night club when it was introduced especially this song and the biggest flaw in this jam is that it's played out till this day. What youngsters these days don't understand is when House came out in 87 and 88 it was made since I'm from Toronto, ON Canada for a new millenium of all races uniting as one through music.

Example this song I'll send a link to follow is true and true on house, what house is really about please if you"ve never neard it listen to the words back in grade 8 even till now for some of us love sees no colour so instead of fighting we Battled it out on the dance floor, even if it was over drugs we'd shake hands with each other and the winner would either have someone come in thinking they could beat me or my old dance partner Devon Williams my boi till this day but soon everyone knew their place and trust me it was all about Love and respect on and off the dance floor and in 2001 ganster Rap came in and all that hard work we as a huge City did to keep it safe & harmonious for all to walk the streets went to hell and props to all the original House Artists we all still anyone from Toronto Canada 38-63 hear, feel & dance to your music everyday.

Sorry to fill up ur page girl but this had to be said after after reading Todd Prager, purplelove & Sherron J this is NOT I repeat not one of the greatest Classic House Jams but it was trendy we knew all the words people who hated house would go in the middle of the dance floor annd spill their drinks lmao to make it easier for the next even better house jam to dance to with our bell bottoms not 60's ells but everyone into House always day or night we all dressed up clean smooth sweet like the music healed our minds, bodies and souls - Whew that's enough typing for me for a week plus me writing that last statement gave me chills ( good ones all over). if you"re a house fan go back as far as 1984 Set it Off' (by gresty1), Follow Me by oODJFriendlyOo and Promise Land by Joe Smooth awe yeah..."
