I did know many kids who were spanked for punishment and sometimes made to stand in the corner with their bare bottoms showing...so i guess the rhyming taunt was a reminder that it was an embarrassing situation to be in. But that's what I am assuming from the dribs and drabs I heard from different people at different times.bluestatedadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934751703986166303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5893219718076521675.post-196001296077023422021-11-08T07:37:29.594-05:002021-11-08T07:37:29.594-05:00Bluestatedad,

In the first I asked where you first chanted this "shame shame double shame" and I was curious about where you first heard it chanted (which blue state and which demographics such as ages, race, gender.) I'm still curious about that for the folkloric record.<br /><br />In my second comment, I forgot about this 2013 pancocojams post and referred you back to it since I just read the comments and not the actual post.<br /><br />That said, your comment prompts me to publish an updated version of this post. I'll add that link below this comment.<br /> <br />Thanks again! It is sung by children when one or more of them see another kid isn't sufficiently clothed, or when they get a peek of a child's underwear. The rhyme aims to embarrass the child into covering oneself up. The rhyme goes like this:<br /><br />"Shame! Shame! Puppy Shame!,<br />All the monkeys know your name!"Sujay Sukumarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03728730838150113180noreply@blogger.com
