Nigerian Singer Yemi Alade - Tangerine (video & comments)

Edited by Azizi Powell

This post showcases the official video for the Nigerian Afro-beat song "Tangerine" by Yemi Alade, featuring Selebobo.

This song & video are prequels to Yemi Alade's hit song/video "Johnny". Both of these videos are filmed like a
soap opera. In the Tangerine video Yemi sings about how her love for Johnny is sweet like a tangerine. But in the "Johnny" song & video-which was released before "Tangerine"- Yemi finds out that Johnny has been cheating on her with three other women. Brief scenes from that "Johnny" video are shown in the beginning of the "Tangerine" video.

Click http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2015/07/yemi-alade-johnny-nigerian-afrobeat.html for a pancocojams post that showcases Yemi Aladi's song/video "Johnny". That post also includes song lyrics and brief explanations for some Igbo or Pidgin English words and phrases from those lyrics.

The content of this post is presented for cultural, entertainment, and aesthetic purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

Thanks to Yemi Alade for her music and thanks to Selebobo and all others who were involved in this song and video. Thanks also to all those who are quoted in this post and thanks to the publisher of this video on YouTube.

SELECTED COMMENTS FROM THIS VIDEO'S DISCUSSION THREAD

These selected comments are given two categories:

Category #1: Yemi Alade & Selebobo and the song itself

and

Category #2: Comments about the character "Johnny" who appears in Yemi Alade's song/video "Johnny" and in this "Tangerine" video.

Some commenters thought that this video's story line took place after Yemi Alade's video "Johnny", but it is actually a prequel. To recap: in the "Tangerine" video Yemi sings about her love for Johnny and says that her love is as sweet as a tangerine. In the "Johnny" video, Yemi finds out that Johnny has been cheating on her with three other women.

I've included several comments that include African American Vernacular English (because I want to document how some African American slang such as the word "killing" (meaning doing exceptionally well) and "jam" (meaning "song") are now found outside of the USA. I'm also interested in documenting how some African American slang (such as "the bomb" (meaning something or someone who is very very good) is still being used in some parts of the world even though most African Americans have moved on to other terms with the same or similar meanings.

The comments within those categories are given in chronological order by year, except for replies. However, these comments may not be in consecutive order. I've assigned numbers for referencing purposes only.
